Best and worst commercials of the year
MSNBC ^ | Aug 22, 2006 | Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

Posted on 08/22/2006 6:50:44 PM PDT by indcons

Only one commercial can top the sheer hatred our readers have for the winner of this year's worst-commercial contest. Yes, only creepy, toenail-snapping Digger the Dermatophyte is more hated than the horrendous repetition that is this year's winning loser, the HeadOn headache remedy commercial.

In case you haven't seen it (you can find it on YouTube, but really, why would you want to?), the commercial is as insanely simple as it is annoying. A female voice repeats "HeadOn: Apply directly to the forehead!" three times as a blissed-out smug woman rolls what appears to be a Bonne Bell LipSmacker on her head.

What in the name of a glue stick in disguise is going on there? First off, does anyone believe that this works any better than, say, rubbing your head with your hand? Who decided that a commercial where only the product name and tagline are repeated over and over was good advertising? What kind of drugs is the model in the ad actually on? And does anyone know anyone who has ever, ever used this product, or seen it for sale anywhere outside these ads?

"I used to enjoy watching Geico's commercials...however, they seem to be losing their creative touch."

What creative touch would that be? For creativity, I look to the Bud Light commercials, very little repetition, lots and lots of originality and just downright humor - excellent ads!! Sort of like the Miller Lite commercials from the '80's. Now Miller Lite sucks, but they did have good commercials.

This is a great ad....long but fascinating.

Reminds of the elaborate mousetrap built by Tom in a very early Tom and Jerry toon. that mousetrap used car parts to start an elaborate series of mechanical events that were supposed to culminate in Jerry's destruction.

Interesting........I HATE that commercial; I find it supremely sad. It's basic message is "I cannot stand having my own children around and can't WAIT to shuffle them off to the public school system to get them out of MY hair." Think about that for a minute, just exactly what that means......

not throwing stones or nuthin' but that's how it came across to me too.

No offense at all! I hadn't gotten that far yet. :)

I am informed by those in the know that the motion that accompanied the cuchi-cuchi is pretty fast. I tried it Saturday during a day of rehearsals. On Sunday, I felt like someone had sligged me in the back with a sack of bricks.

My favorite DJ is a guy in Cincinnati (Gary Burbank, 700 WLW in the afternoons) who does great stuff every day. On the day following election day, he plays political ads, then "blows up" each ad - hilarious! He's about the only reason I'm sorry for leaving Cincinnati in favor of Florida.

I do like the current Hummer ads...the guy buying the tofu and yogurt, and the man behind him in the check out line being a meat-eater; and the mom at the playground whose kid gets cut off by another little guy who has a mouthy mom...and then she goes and trades her wimpy mini-van for an H3. Now thats an ad...

The cadaverous Burt Bacharach one is the worst the three. I'm almost embarrassed for him, except he's a rabid lib and deserves to sink as low as he has.

More Worst:

1. The Travelocity Roaming Gnome commercials. Hate them hate them hate them !

2. Those BP commericials. What a collections of morons! If these people were actually so concerned about "The Future of Energy", how about they do a reading and research?

3. The Human Element commercials. Grrrrrr.

4. The Vonage commercial with the lady talking about Vonage while her husband is similating a sex act in the background. So appropriate for daytime TV !

The head-on commercials point toward the future. Women will soon have rub-on sticks for their foreheads that bring on instant headaches. Then they can say to their "partner," (who has just taken Cialis, Viagra, InstaHard, whatever), "not tonight, honey, I have a headache."

...any commercial where the white male (usually a dad) is portrayed as a dope ...

Describes pretty much all Home Depot commercials these days.

Dope, knave and/or scoundrel.

I don't, the first gecko had a nice posh Brit accent and they switched it to cockney.

I can only imagine the reasons why....

Most certainly did..LOL.

If memory serves me right, Jerry changed the measurements on the drawing board the night before Tom was supposed to build the mousetrap. That episode and the 1946(?) Oscar-winning "Tom as a musical conductor" one remain my favorite toons to this day.
