CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- The name of the new vehicle that NASA hopes returns astronauts to the moon was supposed to be kept hush until an announcement scheduled for next week at the earliest.

But apparently U.S. astronaut Jeff Williams, floating 220 miles above Earth at the International Space Station, did not get the memo.

Is that what gave rise to the expression, "light in the loafers"?

I believe the lander was named Eagle, but the battery-powered jalopy was the Lunar Exploration (or whatever) Module, aka LEM. But I could be mistaken.

What was that sci-fi story about an astronaut stranded in space with a large cargo of beer?

I remember a bit on "Whose Line Is It, Anyway?," the segment called "Date Video." Wayne Brady plopped a garland of olive leaves on his head and said, "My ex-girlfriend gave me hermes."

This was not a secret, I saw the new patch for this on space.com more than a week ago.

NASA keeps changing its design, but when this program was announced, they said that the command module would be reusable, like the Shuttle, with the heat shield replaced after each mission.

It gets even worse, but the name has already been rejected by the FR lunar ship naming committee. We won't go into the entire story of Orion either.

Ah...I think you are right. I was thinking the lander was the LEM.

OOps--looks like I was right the first time----

The Apollo Lunar Module was the lander portion of the Apollo spacecraft built for the US Apollo program to achieve the transit from moon orbit to the surface and back. The module was also known as the LM from the manufacturer designation (yet pronounced 'LEM' from NASA's early name for it, Lunar Excursion Module).

I don't know if I would have considered that, seeing how scorched the Apollo command modules were when they got back from the moon. Thermal stresses from falling all the way from the moon into the atmosphere at 25,000 mph can't be good for the structure.

The project emblem has already been pre released. It's not like no one knew what the project would be named, it just wasn't officially announced yet. Link.

The references to American figures from the Sunday comics section are good. That is culture no matter what Tony Bennett says.

These are the logos for the rest of it. One for the exploration office, one for the booster (I think thats Ares)...I don't remember what the other one is for, but they are related to the program. Orion is the logo for the CEV.
