The Fertility Gap
Wall Street Journal Online ^ | August 22, 2006 | ARTHUR C. BROOKS

Liberal politics will prove fruitless as long as liberals refuse to multiply.

The midterm election looms, and once again efforts begin afresh to increase voter participation. It has become standard wisdom in American politics that voter turnout is synonymous with good citizenship, justifying just about any scheme to get people to the polls. Arizona is even considering a voter lottery, in which all voters are automatically registered for a $1 million giveaway. Polling places and liquor stores in Arizona will now have something in common.

On the political left, raising the youth vote is one of the most common goals. This implicitly plays to the tired old axiom that a person under 30 who is not a liberal has no heart (whereas one who is still a liberal after 30 has no head). The trouble is, while most "get out the vote" campaigns targeting young people are proxies for the Democratic Party, these efforts haven't apparently done much to win elections for the Democrats. The explanation we often hear from the left is that the new young Democrats are more than counterbalanced by voters scared up by the Republicans on "cultural issues" like abortion, gun rights and gay marriage.

But the data on young Americans tell a different story. Simply put, liberals have a big baby problem: They're not having enough of them, they haven't for a long time, and their pool of potential new voters is suffering as a result. According to the 2004 General Social Survey, if you picked 100 unrelated politically liberal adults at random, you would find that they had, between them, 147 children. If you picked 100 conservatives, you would find 208 kids. That's a "fertility gap" of 41%.

I sure hope this is correct. I remember some wacko liberal group that says that reproduction is bad for the planet and they all want to die to save the planet. Funny how all the welfare moms with 4-6 kids are really pulling up their average.

All we have to do is get their vote and we're home free.

This is why they have to take over the schools and colleges. They need to reproduce through conversion.

The "Baby Gap" (caused, in large part, by liberal abortion laws and attitudes) is essentially wiped away by the surge of unwashed masses into the country. The article mentions that, "A state that is currently 55-45 in favor of liberals (like California) will be 54-46 in favor of conservatives by 2020--and all for no other reason than babies." What the author neglects to mention is that California use to be predictably Republican in presidential elections. The Democrat won California only once between 1948 and 1988 (LBJ's landslide), but with Clinton's win in '92, California has become a safe blue state. By the theory of the "fertility gap," a safe Republican state in the late 20th Century like California should have increasingly turned to the right in recent elections, but this hasn't been the case. Part of the reason is that the nominally conservative parents of Baby Boomers have grown older and have begun to die off (that and unchecked illegal immigration). They've been replaced by their kids, raised in the 60s, and representing the attitudes of a self-indulgent generation (which happens to be my own). Our long-term hope probably lies in the children of aging hippies rebelling against the values, and politics, of their parents

So they are like an evil version of the Shakers.

If you look nationwide however, I believe you'll find that in their heyday (i.e. when most of them were still around) the Boomers' parents - the 'Greatest Generation' - was lopsidedly Democratic.

They might be socially conservative relative to subsequent generations, but they were very Democratic.

My daughters just laugh because almost all the anti-war protesters standing on corners have gray hair.

Is it any wonder why the Democrats are supporting immigration from Mexico and amnesty for all. They hope to counter the liberal fertility problem by importing more future Mexicodemocrats. This way they can carry on with their socialist agenda.

Add the "White RINO House" to that list...

By 1980, however, they were, in large part, "Reagan Democrats."

Like I tell liberals who all support abortion on demand while crying about lack of voter turnout (most of them do not get this line):

"You can not register fetal runoff to vote."

Some conservatives may not believe in evolution, but it doesn't mean they don't believe in natural selection.

Liberals don't have a fertility problem. They have an abortion problem.

I'm seeing that at the university at which I teach. I'm the faculty advisor to the College Republicans. These kids are amazing. They come from very liberal homes (lots of them from liberal Hispanic homes) and they say, "All we did was follow the truth. And liberals don't tell the truth." These young people are one of the few things that give me hope in this sick, twisted, perverted world in which we find ourselves.
