Why 'Macaca' Matters
Wall Street Journal ^ | 8/22/06 | BRENDAN MINITER

Posted on 08/22/2006 9:12:13 AM PDT by Blackirish

Sen. George Allen of Virginia was born in Southern California, is the son of a former football legend, and is a political conservative. He's strong on national defense, favors tax cuts, and, as a former governor, has a record of being tough on crime. He is also a budding GOP presidential candidate who has been considered a top contender for the top job.

But while campaigning for re-election to the Senate recently, Mr. Allen stumbled to reveal a weakness that could keep him from a spot on the national ticket. At a stop near the Kentucky border, Mr. Allen poked fun at S.R. Sidarth, a 20-year-old Virginia native of Indian descent who was there to gather opposition research for Democratic challenger Jim Webb. "This fellow here, over here with the yellow shirt, macaca, or whatever his name is," Mr. Allen said, "he's with my opponent." The senator then went on to welcome the man to "real America."

But Hillary Clinton's "Gandhi" crack and Joe "Hairplug" Biden saying that you can't order in a 7-Eleven without knowing Hindi, they get ignored.

Way to play into the Rats' hands, Miniter.

In this PC world, you might be right. Feigning to be offended by someones mild insult seems to get alot of traction, even amongst the ever sensitive conservative pundits like this author.

The only reason Allen loses my support is because he backtracked and apologized.

PCism is poison to this nation.

What Mr. Allen is finding out is the same thing Trent Lott learned a few years ago: that Southern politicians who don't appreciate the sensitivity of race issues may pay a political price. Unless they are democrats, in which case they get a free pass.

What a bunch of macaca. It's not "racist". But it does reflect poorly on his intelligence. America is ready for a leader who can communicate, not someone who "wakes up every morning to wrestle with English language all day, and frequently looses."

Yup. Republicans HAVE to apologize. Democrats skate.

It's BS, but that's the way it is.

Mr. Webb is still a weak candidate and full of macaca(couldn't resist).

As a state legislator in the 1980s, Mr. Allen opposed making Martin Luther King's birthday a state holiday.

a) I like this guy (Allen).

b) I get a disgusted taste in my mouth reading this column. I don't think it's the duty of every elected official to endorse every calculated cry of racial resentment ginned up to offend American culture. I mean, Arthur Ashe was one of my heroes growing up—but he was just a tennis player. Exploiting his memory to spit on a Confederate memorial is mischievous and evil. I don't get why it was such a pivotal moment for the writer.

Had these comments come from someone with a different political history and from a different part of the country, it would be easy to dismiss them as a harmless error.

Sadly true. It is not what is said, it is who said it.

Agreed. Unapologetic defiance works for me.

As usual, the leftist media is overplaying their hand. This was a one-day story and they are trying to build this up as worse than saying the N-word. It's ridiculous.

that Southern politicians who don't appreciate the sensitivity of race issues may pay a political price...

I don't remember Robert Byrd paying a price. I don't remember O. Faubus, clinton's Arkansas mentor paying a price. I don't remember the Democrats opposing civil rights legislation in the 60's paying a price. As long as the "price is exacted by the Democrat's handmaiden's in the media only Republicans will have to pay.

This is all a MSM/Dem manufactured attack that is aimed at knocking Allen out from 2008. The WP ran this story in various forms for six days straight. It was weaved into the front page twice, inside the A section, on the editorial page, the opinion page, Metro section, and Style section.

Allen apologized, but that is not good enough for his attackers who are using it for political advantage. Everyone knows that he is not a racist.

Allen, IMHO, only won his Senate seat due to Chuck Robb's "Miss Virginia" and massage problem. Virginia is an extremely strange political environment with respect that Northern Virginia (Fairfax, Arlington, Washington suburbs) is liberal, Southeastern Virginia (Va. Beach, Norfolk, Hampton Roads) conservative, Richmond area and Piedmont neutral and Republican leaning, and Southwestern (Roanoke) up for grabs, but often in Democratic hands.

Allen should never have run for re-election, if he's considering the Presidency. Stupid stupid stupid
