I really don't like SNL anymore but I have a friend who loves it so i see it occasionally. The only 2 skits that were remotely funny recently were the cork soakers and Debbie Downer, and I read that Rachel Dratch just quit. Oh well.

What got me to Mad originally was Alex Borstein's Korean gal. I stuck around for Stuart and Mo. The old maxim that tragedy is easy, comedy is hard, rules.

"The Sinatra Group"

A greate takeoff on "The McLaughlin Group" and one of the funniest skits that show's ever seen.

SNL hasn't given me reason to stay up late in nearly 20 years. Even the afore-mentioned SciFi channel has a better lineup during that period.

Even though he's a lefty gun-grabber, you can't miss the look of joy when MacGyver opens up with the MP-5, the P-90 or event the new HK PDW (P-90 was best, though).

And, he added the gift of comedy that the FNG sadly lacks.

At least Stargate Monday has the older stuff.

Agreed. They just don't make it like they used to. No good hosts these days either.

My husband is going to be a happy camper. I got him the first season for Christmas. The first 5 seasons were the best, anyway.

"The movies enabled a mediocre talent like Chevy Chase to become a very wealthy man."

- Yes, I haven't heard about Chase in years, but during his heyday I saw him in interviews a few times and never listened to a more pompous, vain and conceited jerk who seemed to be completely oblivious to the fact that he owed his 15 minutes of fame entirely on his ability to do a Buster Keaton inspired pratfall by tripping over a rug.

My first SNL commercial, which I watched under a blanket in the mid 70s was "Meat Wagon".

It was a slot car racing set that came with an ambulance, a crowbar and body bags.

Norm MacDonald kicked ass while he was there. Got booted for being too conservative but was by far one of the best.

Believe me, Lifetime IS "The Men Are Scum Channel". There are only three plot lines in all their offereings and the guy is always scum.

"...I can't imagine writing funny stuff week in and week out."

- I'm sure I'll get some objections, but to me the best true, "skit" writers for SNL were Martin Short, Dana Carvey and Billy Crystal.
In my opinion, the best comedy skit show - past or present, was SCTV which still elicits guffaws because of it's gentle but pointed satire of big business, politicians and show biz vanity and shallowness.
It proved that you don't have to beat people over the head to get your point across - a skill that clowns like Stewart and Mahar don't seem to have grasped.

Norm McDonald was the greatest Weekend Update anchor they ever had.

I'll take your word for it. I don't think I've actually stopped on it for more than 3 seconds.

Your tagline on the NYT - its funny - I live nowhere near NY and they've called me at least four times this year. I love telling them why they're being forced to solicit like crazy.
