KIEV, Ukraine - An airliner flying from southern Russia to St. Petersburg crashed on Tuesday in eastern Ukraine, the Ukrainian Emergencies Ministry said.
The ministry said helicopters circling the site about 30 miles north of the regional town of Donetsk saw the aircraft, a Russian-made Tupolev 154, in flames.
Russias Emergencies Ministry said 160 passengers and 10 crew were aboard the aircraft belonging to Pulkovo Airlines.
The Interfax news agency, citing the ministry, said 30 bodies had been found.
There was no word on whether anyone survived.

Igor Krol, a spokesman for the Ukrainian ministry, said that according to preliminary information a fire broke out in the plane at an altitude of 33,000 feet. The crew then decided to make an emergency landing.

Severe turbulence?
KIEV (AFX) - A Russian airliner with 170 passengers and crew aboard crashed today in eastern Ukraine, Ukrainian and Russian officials said.
'A Tupolev 154 flying from Anapa to Saint Petersburg sent a distress signal at 3.37 pm. At 3.39 it disappeared from radar screens,' a spokeswoman for Russia's emergency situations ministry told Agence France-Presse in Moscow.
A spokesman for Ukraine's emergency situations ministry also confirmed that the plane had gone down.
The reason for the crash was not immediately clear but Interfax news agency quoted the head of Russia's air traffic control service as saying that the plane went down after entering an area of severe air turbulence.
Ukrainian ministry spokesman Igor Krol said that Ukrainian rescue teams had located the wreckage of the plane, Interfax news agency reported.
'The plane is burning on the ground,' Interfax quoted Krol as saying.

Tu-154 passenger plane crashed in Dzerzhynskyi district, Donetsk region on Tuesday.
Representative of the main department of the Emergency Situations and Protection of Population from Chornobyl Accident Consequences Ministry has disclosed this in a statement to Ukrainian News.
She said that ministry working group has already arrived to the site of the accident.
Emergency Situations Ministry press service head Ihor Krol told Ukrainian News that about 2:30 pm, Russian Tu-154 plane disappeared from radar screens. The plane flew from Anapa to Saint Petersburg (Russia) through Ukraine.
He said that it is yet unknown whether the plane had crashed or made an emergency landing.
A total of four helicopters of the Emergency Situations Ministry flew to the site of the accident.
