Lebanese PM says Canadian position on Mid-East conflict not helpful

MONTREAL -- Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Saniora criticized Canada on Monday for its support of Israel during the recent conflict in the Middle East.

After meeting with three Canadian opposition MPs touring Lebanon, Saniora told Radio-Canada that he was particularly upset at Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s declaration that Israel’s bombardment was a “measured response” to the kidnapping of Israeli soldiers by Hezbollah.

“They could see what a crime the Israelis have made against Lebanon and against humanity,” Saniora said. “This is what you call a measured response?”

Saniora said the rest of the world found the action disproportionate and he said Canada could do a better job of supporting Lebanon, both politically and in terms of humanitarian aid.

His comments come in the midst of a controversy over comments by the Canadian MPs touring his country.

Liberal MP Borys Wrzesnewskyj, Bloc Quebecois MP Maria Mourani et New Democrat MP Peggy Nash arrived in Lebanon last Friday on the trip organized by National Council on Canada-Arab Relations.

The group came under fire after Wrzesnewskyj was quoted in some newspaper reports Monday saying Hezbollah should be removed from Ottawa’s official list of terrorist organizations.

Wrzesnewskyj denied the reports.

The Ontario MP said he favours changing Canadian laws that forbid contact with known terrorist groups. He said the law undermines efforts to seek lasting peace between Israel and Hezbollah guerrillas after a brutal 33-day war.

But Hezbollah’s terrorist status should not change, he said in an interview from Lebanon.

Saniora said he opposes the inclusion of Hezbollah on the Canadian list of terrorist organizations.

“These terms are not helpful,” the Lebanese prime minister said.

What is a measured response to terrorism? Like a measured response to a flood? An earthquake? Overwhelming force is absolutely necessary. Kill em. Kill em dead. Wipe em out. Bury them. Wreck their ability to rebuild. The Israelis are a tiny minority of the folks sharing that snadbox. If they have to kick serious ass to hang onto their part, so be it.

Excellent post! The whining of the response by Israel to the Hezzies premeditated attack, murder and kidnapping of Israeli soldiers is like a person throwing a sucker punch than crying for help when they are hit back 10 times by the person they attacked.

The more the lebanese government sides with the Hezzies the less respected they are by the free world and they isolate themselves to become a failed government like Syria.

"What is a measured response to terrorism?"

WHAT IF a terrorist organization began dropping rockets into Miami, Philadelphia, N.Y.C., etc. resulting in American fatalities, like what happened to Israel? What do you suppose our response would be? IMO we would use every means short of the nuclear option and the country willingly harboring the terrorist group would complain about our disproportionate response (if there would be anyone left alive to complain).

I guess it all depends on who's doing the measuring?

A country that willingly harbors a terrorist organization better be prepared to absorb a tremendous amount of pounding. Lebanon can cry me a river!

If they're looking for sympathy they can go elsewhere!

Well, after that outburst, you can put your humanitarian aid in your pipe and smoke it - terrorist.

Prime Minister Harper standing firm. Hezbollah will not make a statement to desist from destroying Israel's right to live without fear.

He is also taking a bashing from some editorials. This is because he had work to do up in Canada's far territories. He did not attend the World AIDS conference.

It is as if a massive conference solves anything. What helps is the hands on noble workers in the field. It is the researchers and the laboratories. There must be money somewhere in the offing for expenses, money that could be spent in the field.

Steer her straight Prime Minister.
