President Bush Approves Over the Counter Early Abortion Pill, Pro-Life Base Decries Move

By John-Henry Westen

WASHINGTON, August 21, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) - For his pro-life supporter base, President George W. Bush stepped into one of the biggest political landmines of his Presidential career today with his approval of over the counter status for the abortion-causing morning after pill Plan B.

A press release by Human Life International underscored the seriousness of the move as it was titled, "President Bush Files for Divorce with Catholic Base." Rev. Thomas J. Euteneuer, president of Human Life International commented, "President Bush's implied support for the abortion-causing drug Plan B is completely inconsistent with his recent veto of the embryonic stem cell research (ESCR) funding bill. What the president apparently fails to realize is that Plan B kills the same innocent unborn children that the ESCR process does."

At a White House press conference this morning, the President was asked by Bill Sammon a reporter from the Washington Examiner about Plan B and his new FDA commissioner who supports its over the counter status. "Mr. President, some pro-life groups are worried that your choice of FDA Commissioner will approve over the counter sales of Plan B, a pill that, they say, essentially can cause early-term abortions," said the reporter. "Do you stand by this choice, and how do you feel about Plan B in general?"

The President replied, "I believe that Plan B ought to be -- ought to require a prescription for minors, is what I believe. And I support Andy's decision."

Andy, as the President referred to him, is the new Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Andrew von Eschenbach. Pro-life groups last week called for von Eschenbach's resignation over his deal with a drug company to make a high-dose of a drug (Plan B, a morning-after pill) available without a prescription to women 18 year of age and older.

Concerned Women for America (CWA) blasted the decision noting that it is ludicrous to allow Plan B without medical supervision when a low-dose of the same drug (birth control pills) requires medical oversight to protect women from serious health complications.

"It is deplorable that the head of the FDA would put his career ambitions and a drug company's interests above women's health," said Wendy Wright, CWA's President. "CWA provided legal and regulatory evidence that the FDA does not have the authority to do what it is proposing and medical evidence that any dose of the drug requires medical oversight to protect women's health. The drug is known to cause serious complications such as blood clots and stroke."

Rev. Euteneuer added, "The president must demonstrate a consistent respect for the sanctity of all human life or he risks provoking a great divorce with the conservative Catholics that compromise a large part of his support base. Human beings in the embryonic stage of development deserve equal protection under the law and the president's position falls far short of that mark."

And am proud to stand with the president on this matter who has scientists and researchers who are just a TAD more knowledgeable

They know more than the manufacturer, who says that this pill can prevent implantation of a conceived human being?

Bush's Plan B comment contradicts pro-life stance:
Emergency contraceptives can kill; president misses point

Planned Parenthood has a stake in Plan B decision:
Sweetheart deal with drug's maker could net mega-millions

He signed a bill in the middle of the night and went back to sleep. I had a lot of trouble sleeping while she slowly died. I paid a price even at my job for being so concerned about her fate.

The legislation in retrospect was symbolic with the courts dictating the outcome regardless of what it said. The almost unanimous judicial clampdown that followed its passage and ignored its words showed how it was a ruse to make politicians look good.

The judiciary still has power to do what it wants and dictate on a variety of issues including life ones.

As for President Bush I think he's been taking a few black eyes since March 31,2005. He's looking a public opinion and talking about the "good, decent people" who want to run away in Iraq. He's also playing the middle on the Plan B issue.

I know how the big politicos operate. I have experience with one man who is in leadership in my own county. They play the abortion issue on one side "respect for life" and the "birth control" issue on the other.

These issues are polled and focus grouped with public opinion pointing in different directions among Republican and "moderate" voters. The President plays to both with his pro-life and pro-Plan B positions.

You are so right. I'm not ready to jump off the ship yet but there is a debate here on which I favor keeping Plan B as far away from easy use as possible because it can destroy human life.

Yes, here is another slap in the face of the Religious Right.

Social conservatives need to be loud and clear that they will only vote for those who stand with them, in practice just as much as in proclamation, and not allow the Republicans to take the social conservative vote for granted as they do so routinely now!

Yes, because no one panders to the public quite like President Bush. *rolling my eyes* So your problem is that he thought sleep might actually be a good idea? Good luck finding a candidate who will live up to your expectations then. I was concerned too. It didn't stop me from sleeping.

Name another issue you care about: should it be sold short every time anyone cries "War on Terror"?

The emergency contraception pill should not be confused with mifepristone (also called Mifeprex, and formerly known as RU-486), an abortifacient which is taken after implantation has occurred, aborting the pregnancy. The morning-after pill must be taken before implantation, or it will have no effect. Earlier, it was believed that emergency contraception worked by preventing blastocysts from implanting in the womb. Today, however, current medical science, as reflected in research papers published in respected medical journals, states that emergency contraception works by preventing ovulation. Recent medical studies in animals (the rat and the monkey) did not suggest that emergency contraception prevents implantation; however, this mechanism of action cannot be ruled out in all cases, as it is impossible to prove a negative.

My personal impression is that with studies indicating that such treatment is 89% effective at preventing pregnancy, that something more than preventing ovulation is going on. As for a specific mechanism of action that would prevent implantation, I can't really give you an answer to that.

it's just another step towards the culture of death. I can't understand why he gave in like that. Who was he trying to impress or who was giving him pressure to do this. for the first time in almost 50 yrs. we have a republican Congress and president and this is all that they can come up with?

Exactly! I began last week to send emails to the RNC telling them that I would not support liberal RINOs under any circumstance.

You do understand that this pill isn't the morning after pill and that with this pill, conception never does occur, don't you?

Why do you continue to repeatedly misstate the facts when they have been pointed outed to you over and over again.

The manufacturer of Plan B on its own website explicitly states that the pill may act to prevent implantation after conception has occurred. Yet, you continue to claim this pill acts only as a contraceptive. Again, why?
