few of them were aware of the philosophical basis of Western achievement, which they believed to be merely materialist and founded on crude plunder, never having heard any other viewpoint. Gee I wonder why not.

I think the writer, as well as Conrad and Updike, has the Muslim (or any other variety) terrorist pegged.

A lot of foiled attempts recently. If the law enforcement people slip up just once, it's disaster.
It's time to profile.
Also, block all people from known terrorist-harboring countries, and expel those who are here.
