LOS ANGELES
Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney told the California GOP convention Saturday that the United States should encourage foreigners with skills to immigrate, while discouraging those who come here illegally and without skills.
"It is wrong for us to build an absolute concrete wall against those with skills and enterprise," he said, referring to foreign students who come here for advanced study, "and have a wide open door for people with no education and no skills."
His remarks were greeted with enthusiastic applause from this conservative crowd, for whom illegal immigration is a hot issue. Romney, a Republican governor in a Democratic state, is exploring a presidential run in 2008. California, with its reservoir of campaign cash, is a key stop along campaign trails.
Romney, a social conservative, also criticized gay marriage, saying, "every child deserves a mother and a father." He praised President Bush's aggressive foreign and military policies.
"We're under attack by jihadists, a group of violent, extreme Islamists, who have as their intent, not just dropping a bomb here or there, but rather causing the collapse of our country," he said. "Thank heavens we have a president who understands the nature of this risk."
Romney also said the nation should wean itself from oil.
"This country is using too much oil," he said, adding that billions of dollars were being poured "down black holes in countries who don't like us."
He said improving education and investing in technology was the way to keep America competitive as Asian economies grow and employers move high-end jobs overseas.
Can they come here legally?

So, Romney's the antischwarzenegger?
Is it just me or does this creep anyone else out?
His approach fits the demographics of the US. Baby boomers are retiring and the follow on generation to replace them are smaller in number. This has a great impact in jobs which require professional skills and experience. Baby boomers retiring from factory and nontech skill jobs do not need a larger replacement population because these jobs are being downsized or moved overseas. Our current lack of immigration enforcement and policy is importing these unskilled laborers into the country when we do not need them in the long run, thus creating a class of people who will not go back and become a burden to our infrastructure and taxes.
LOL.. isn't it fun watching politicos posturing and pandering these days?
It is! As zarf points out, perhaps Romney only wants to encourage the country to just make whoopee.
only wants to encourage the country to just make whoopee ...
and likely more babies,,
NOW and NARAL would never go for that..
Governor RINO actually thinks he has a shot at the nomination.

Sounds good to me.
Angelides is the anti-Arnold.
And?
(lol)
Sounds good to me.
FRankly, that isn't saying much, considering the crowd he is addressing and pandering being the order of the day , imo. For this very reason, I guess it explains why he wasn't invited to the La Raza event like Rove and the Gub.
In other news, the sky is blue.
