Democrats think it's their year on national security
Chicago Sun-Times ^ | August 18, 2006 | Tom Bevan

Here we go again. War in the Middle East. Instability and violence in Iraq. A confident, bellicose Iran continuing to pursue the capability for nuclear weapons. A terrorist plot intended to cause "mass murder on an unimaginable scale" by blowing up as many as 10 planes over the Atlantic Ocean.

Though elections -- particularly midterms -- are traditionally driven by local concerns and personalities, with just over 80 days to go before voters step behind the curtain and make a choice, the issue of national security is again looming large, as it did in 2002 and 2004.

The domestic political backdrop to the seemingly endless string of dangerous events swirling overseas is an increasingly antiwar Democratic Party, much of which was thrilled by the election of antiwar political neophyte Ned Lamont over three-term incumbent Sen. Joe Lieberman in the Connecticut primary on Aug. 8.

In the ensuing days, Republicans jumped to argue that Lamont's triumph signals that the Democratic Party continues to lurch to the left and remains fundamentally unserious and untrustworthy on matters of national security. Meanwhile, Democrats cried foul, slamming Republicans for suggesting that opposition to Bush's policy in Iraq (which Democrats believe is a quagmire and hopeless failure) somehow equates to an unwillingness to vigorously oppose terrorist threats to the United States.

It certainly feels like we've seen this movie before. Or have we?

After suffering a historic defeat in 2002 thanks in large part to a debate over homeland security and losing to George W. Bush in 2004 in what was essentially a referendum on the president's Iraq policy, Democrats are increasingly confident they can thread the needle this time around, opposing the war in Iraq without losing the confidence of the public on the broader issue of national security.

Democrats point to recent public opinion polls to demonstrate why they think this time will be different. According to the latest Gallup Poll, dissatisfaction with Bush's handling of Iraq is mired near an all-time low. Only 35 percent approve of the way he's dealing with Iraq while 62 percent disapprove, a 21-point net decline from a Gallup Poll preceding the 2004 election. There's been a similar shift in public opinion over whether invading Iraq was a mistake. Today, a majority (56 percent) of Americans think Iraq was a mistake while 41 percent say it was not. In October 2004, those numbers were more or less reversed: 44 percent said it was a mistake, 52 percent said it was not -- again a net 23-point swing against Bush's position and in favor of the Democrats.

Most important for Democrats, however, a few recent surveys show that they have closed a large, longstanding deficit on the issue of national security and now trail Republicans by only a few points on the question of which party is more able to handle the defense of the country.

But the events in London last week have put the spotlight squarely back on the issue of terrorism and will test the proposition of whether Democrats have truly made up ground. In light of the potentially catastrophic results of the most recent terrorist attempt, Republicans are going to force Democrats to defend some of their actions since the 2004 elections as well.

For example, Democrats have absolutely crucified the Bush administration over its NSA terrorist surveillance program, first revealed in the New York Times in December 2005. That same month, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid bragged at a press conference that he and fellow Senate Democrats had successfully led a filibuster and "killed the Patriot Act." In June of this year, Democrats were up in arms again when another leak revealed the existence of a surveillance program to track financial transactions of suspected terrorists.

The Bush administration believes these programs are vital tools in the fight against terrorism, and Bush went out of his way to reiterate as much at an appearance at the National Counterterrorism Center earlier this week. Democrats responded that instead of making America safer over the last five years, the Bush administration has done the opposite.

With control of one, and potentially both chambers of Congress at stake in less than three months, both parties are scrambling for every possible advantage. Though Tip O'Neill once famously stated that "all politics is local," the issues of Iraq and national security will surely be weighing heavily on voters' minds this November.

I was hoping you could come up with something for Ted. I liked the title "A Terrorist's Lament (or Lamont)"

So does a Lieberman win translate into a democrat "loss" of a Senate seat?

Yes but the dilemma of course is that the majority of America has been hypnotized by the left. They drove wedge issues like immigration reform, Harriet Miers, DPW deal and Katrina that split the conservatives. Even though not a single Liberal has ever offered any type of solutions or hope of any optimistic outcome in any of the major sectors i.e., WOT, IRAQ, ECONOMY, Immigration Reform, etc. The Dems employment of attack Bush, Bush lied, Its Bush's fault and their use of their partners in the media to paint everything bad has had a dramatic impact on main stream America this is revealed in polls most notably the Congressional polls that say America is ready to change the Congress to Democrat control. If this hold true in Nov there is no shred of doubt that the rest of Bush's presidency will be in defense of countless legal proceedings and investigations that the Dems will level in an attempt to impeach him. The bottom line is that this effort will make America weaker in the WOT and embolden our enemies. The outcome I fear is a major attack in 08 during the campaign (Very likely with direct coordination between Dems and the terrorists either directly or indirectly) with which the Dems will knock down the last lege that the President has to stand on i.e., No attacks since 911 when that happens any dem running for office will most likely win the Presidency regardless of how far to the left they are. The country will have to endure more and more attacks with an emboldened Al-Qeada. The dems will continue to blame Bush failed policies for our strife and slowly but surly just like France, we will surrender this country. The GOP needs to be out there now spinning the Dems plans (non-plans) as failure. i.e., pulling out of Iraq will make it a terrorist haven to plot and plan U.S. Attacks period end of discussion there is no other alternative no matter how they want to spin it. The why we are there is irrelevant. They need to trumpet the economy tell the people that everyone is better off and that the Dems will raise taxes point to corzine bottom line people will get laid off or fired and then they will be worse off. Point to Terror Dems will reverse the Patriot act the ACLU will never allow any profiling make the choice life or death because it is.

I think you're right. In the end, the Democrats will have a hard time winning the election, because they don't offer anything. And you can't win with nothing.

"Democrats point to recent public opinion polls to demonstrate why they think this time will be different."

IT is good to know that the RATS base their entire political strategy on a poll of 1,053 people taken in San Francisco.

Fire away with it. Maybe it should be on a t-shirt. I think I need to put it on a magnetic bumper sticker.

[Democrats think it's their year on national security]

Democrats think? I think not. They conspire and manipulate and lie and steal and murder and destroy all that is good about the once Christian America that God once blessed because of the sound thinking of Christians in government who acted justly and loved mercy and walked humbly with their God.
Democrats are fascist liars and murderers of children and are destroying America daily with thier new age madness. What they don't realize is that their is one God and Father in heaven, one faith by His only begotten son, Jesus the Annointed one and Judge of all men, one baptism of the Holy Spirit that saves the believing Christians from their sins by the works and blood and ressurection power of God's dearly beloved Son.
Let God be true and every man a liar. I think that only Jesus the Christ of God can rule over men. He who rules over men must be just and rule in the fear of God.

Demonrats are a threat to this country. They're nothing but morally bankrupt, corrupt, lying, spewing finks. I don't want to see the United States put throught the dishonor and disrespect that they bring to our country. Unfortunately Republicans are forced to deal with an ignorant public that wants to run and not face what we are up against. The GOP just needs to simply ask what the Demonrats are offering up in bringing down oil prices(THEY and their extremists will only add to the suffering), the war on terrorism(THEY just think we should be on the defensive, talk to terrorists and look how they and their judges impede on programs that would make us safer), the economy(they want to raise taxes, but just point out the way in which the economy has revived and the deficit is going down, just something as simple as the FACTS which they can't deal with). A lot needs to be made of what kind of judges they put on the bench because America needs to be awakened to the danger their judges put our country in).

Democrats point to recent public opinion polls to demonstrate why they think this time will be different

They only poll that matters is the one on election day

And time and time again .. The democrats lose

Why .. because we have their OWN words and their OWN actions to base our opinions on

Democrats have done NOTHING to help our country to fight the terrorists

It will be a cold day in hell before I EVER trust a democrat with my life!
