GOP faithful open convention (California)
Sacramento Bee ^ | Aug. 18, 2006 | Laura Mecoy

With President Bush down in the polls, gasoline prices on the rise and the electorate dismayed by the lack of progress in Iraq, California Republicans gathered here Friday for their final statewide convention before the Nov. 7 election.

Former Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore urged the party faithful to focus on the domestic issues of taxation, government spending and education, rather than the national security.

But he was optimistic the GOP could win in California and praised Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for resisting tax increases.

"One state where we have the best chance to bring us back is California," he said.

The governor is scheduled to address the convention at a luncheon meeting Saturday, and Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is slated to speak at dinner Saturday night. The convention ends on Sunday.

Time for Republicans and conservatives to unify behind the CA Republican candidates -- all of them, and not allow the Dems to fully take over CA.

I think ambrose used to attend as a delegate. I sure miss him.

I have no problem backing Republicans in every race, and will do so. I won't vote for one Dem!

My problem is that too many Republicans don't take the war on terror seriously enough, though.

If we lose this war, nothing else matters--taxes, spending, etc are all minor issues until we can be safe from the terrorists IMHO.

So when are you going to do that, hypocrite?

A white population that is too liberal + an increasingly diverse population overall = bad things for the GOP in California.

Schwarzenegger's success is likely an an anomaly (he's a movie star, and is liberal on all the pc matters), and likely contains no lessons to be learned for other statewide races in the state, especially federal ones.

I hope I'm wrong, but I can't see a turnaround in CA.

"One state where we have the best chance to bring us back is California," he said.

That's beyond silly.

How right you are!

The Dems are leading the charge to try to unilaterally disarm us in this war -- just look at the ruling of the Carter-appointed judge against wiretapping of terrorists.

But you are right, some Republicans don't do the right things either -- starting with McCain who authored and pushed through the terrorist protection bill, that Congress passed with overwhelming majority. How are we supposed to find out anything, if we can't interrogate the terrorists we captured?!

You must be talking to yourself in the mirror and are confused.

I am the one who supports Republican candidates -- you are the one who keeps working on getting Angelides elected.

One huge thing that is desperately needed is for conservatives to figure out how to replace RINO's with real Republicans! I don't know how that can be done, but I certainly recognize that if we don't do it, we're seriously screwed.

The first step for Congress is to try to defeat Dem and keep electing Republicans, so we have an overwhelming majority -- THEN we can start replacing RINOs with conservatives.

Replacing RINOs with Dems is cutting off our nose to spite our face.

In CA we can be glad we have moderate Republicans -- only 34% of the voters are registered Republican and the independents vote for Dems by a 2 to 1 margin. That's why all the statewide elected offices are filled with Dems -- with the exception of Arnold, who appointed one other Republican whose name escapes me at the moment.

It always astounds me that CA is represented by some of the worst people in Congress. The awful thing (to the rest of the country) is that these nutjobs that CA sends there have so much effect on the rest of us! The same can be said for the idiots that the east coast elects, MA in particular.

Does the MSM start every article about the Democrats similar to the way they started this one? For F***s sake.

It would read:

With Howard Dean and Nancy Pelosi, leaders of the Democrats, having approval ratings significantly lower than President Bush, and the democrats offering no solutions to the oil prices and only seen as carping sissies, and freshly electing a Michael Moore supporting candidate for Sentor in Conn, the Democarats gathered here Friday for their final statewide convention before the Nov. 7 election.

How damn pathetic.

Typical lib enemedia gloom and doom. It's hard to belive that after almost six years of the Bush administration that any of us are still alive and if the Dems don't win the House or Senate in November there probably won't be. If you don't believe that, just ask the NY or LA Slimes or the Sacramento Bee.
