WASHINGTON // A senior State Department official said yesterday that he expects Iran to reject a U.N.-backed entreaty to end its nuclear enrichment program and added that the United States will quickly press for international sanctions against Tehran if an Aug. 31 deadline is not met.

Undersecretary of State R. Nicholas Burns, the Bush administration's point man on Iran, said the United States has the backing of fellow permanent members of the United Nations Security Council for economic and diplomatic sanctions and will push for them to be imposed early next month if Iran does not halt uranium enrichment at its Natanz nuclear facility.

Remember how Iran was being put on the ropes concerning its nuclear program, then Hezbollah started a war with Israel and took this issue off of the headlines?

I can see lots of reasons why Iran would/will reject the U.N. appeal to end its nuclear program.

Not for me it didn't. This war was all about Iran's nuclear ambitions. Iran needs Hezbollah threatening Israel to hold off the Israelis and the U.S. from bombing them. The threat of a chemical warhead or two or three hitting Tel Aviv is real and it is a lot easier to launch from Southern Lebanon than from Tehran.

No kiddin'. The UN is entirely irrelevant.

I frankly half expect their response will be an actual nuke test. Perhaps over Israel... Ahmadinejad has promised a "light over Jerusalem" to commemorate the anniversary of Miraj, the flight of Mohammed on a winged horse to heaven and back, on Aug. 21/22.

Cheers!

Next Tuesday is the 22nd. Ahvlostmymind of Iran thinks he's been sent by Allah to end the world. 'Fire in the sky over Jerusalem.' Iranian govt. thugs are smashing satellite dishes. Evidently they don't want Iranians to watch CNN. We live in interesting times.

If we're lucky that will be the least of it.

LOL. Really, what are we going to do about it at this point? The UN is a useless organization taking up prime NYC Real Estate and working against the United States at nearly every turn. IN OUR OWN COUNTRY!

And I was concerned about Fat Ted's ability to take up space...

The UN puts Fat Ted to shame.

No, it didn't. That was never in the headlines except maybe one day. A few follow the UN at all, and probably the same number follow Iran's ravings. Those would be be the professional diplomats and heads of state, and those who listen to talk radio and read FR. The other 95% of the world amuses itself with trying to stay a paycheck ahead or immerses itself in amusements and pastimes of less global importance. Perhaps 22 Aug will come and go and perhaps N Kor and Iran will both test nukes, strut around a while until they realize that nobody gives a rat's $#$, and then try to find something else to make themselves relevant.

Could that fact that Iran has already rejected this 'appeal' about two dozen times in the past three months have anything to do with it? I am glad the people we have in the State Department are so damn intelligent. I was beginning to worry.

Hopefully GW will hit them where it hurts the most. They import at least %40 percent of their gasoline and other refined fuel. Blockade the gasoline imports, knock out a refinery or two and bring the whole country to a halt.
