This was the seventh time in seven years that Sen. Gil Cedillo, D-Los Angeles, had tried to pass the measure, which would establish a special license for the state's more than 2 million undocumented immigrants who, according to estimates, are driving.
His most recent efforts have been passed by the Legislature only to be vetoed by Govs. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Gray Davis. This time, the bill was shot down by a Democratic-controlled committee.
Political insiders suggested the measure was perhaps too controversial for an election year. The bill is opposed by Republicans -- and a majority of voters -- who say licenses would reward people in violation of immigration law.
Republican Schwarzenegger, who is running for re-election, has said he would veto the bill. His Democratic opponent, state Treasurer Phil Angelides, supports the measure.

Why the hell does this even come up for serious consideration.
BUMP!
Twisted Liberal Logic = Reward those who break our laws
"True Conservatives" = Wrong Again.

Well, what do you think? Remember the choice: Arnold or Angelides.
If Angelides gets elected, the Dem Legislature will pull out that bill and Angelides will sign it so fast, it will make your head spin.
The Dems keep pushing it.
The only reason they didn't pass it AGAIN, is that Arnold said he would veto it, and they don't want to give Arnold the publicity in an election year, to actually veto the bill and show how anti-American the Dems really are.
Here's hoping a comprehensive immigration bill is not forthcoming from Congre$$ this year or in the foreseeable future that includes "background checks" on illegals which is not likely to be much of a check and just another bureaucratic nightmarish piece of this whole illegals issue..
It is not necessarily true that the gUb would still veto this legislation in the future were such a federal law passed by the feds to make background checks part of the process.
I have a feeling his desire to see the license also bear a special mark would not be as big a concern and likely to cause a veto as he has stated were one of his 2 main concerns in opposing said legislation.
Just wanted to be fair and include that for that record. ;-)

Why, do you think the status quo of millions of immigrants coming across the border is better than a reasonable bill?
First its a special license, then its being able to vote, then its citizenship. That is the liberal line. They know most people won't go along with their extreme viewpoints so they want to try to step it along. Just like every other issue. Just say No!
I guess you are saying, that if there were a Federal Law, Arnold would obey it, not break it.
I suppose you would want him to break the law and get arrested.
Issues like this remind us of why the purists strategy is so flawed.
Even assuming a fantasy scenario where conservatives deliberately vote republicans out of office, assured that they will regain power of course, after the people see how badly democrats run things.
What is forgotten, is the years of legislation that is passed, like the drivers license bill, enough years of total control gives Dem's a chance to pass boat loads of largely irreversible, self serving laws, that makes it next impossible to remove them.
Another important reason we must not allow Angelides to get elected, if we can help it.
Some here WANT to see Angelides elected. Now how conservatives is that?!
I'm one of those Kalifornians! One-Bill Gil is actually my senator. Because of the convoluted way his district was drawn, my city has just about zero influence on the state senate.
and you would be wrong and he would be in the clear but still violating the will of a majority of the actual states population yet who's voice would once agian be rebndered irrelevant like it has on other issues in the past.
Nice try hiding behind well if the feds say its ok, its ok.. pathetic.
Raises some interesting questions about having the courage of one's convictions, huh? The legislator's Democrats will vote for the bill as long as they're distanced from accepting responsibility for their vote. Real courageous!

You wouldn't want to actually encourage more to come and make it even easier for them to move across the nation with ease or legitimize the too many millions already here?
Your true colors are showing. Thanks!
