Lebanons army has begun setting up checkpoints near dozens of illegal border crossings with Syria and Israel in a bid to help prevent arms smuggling in the region, a Lebanese military official said today.
The plan is apparently aimed primarily at preventing arms supplies from reaching Hezbollah guerrillas a key demand of last weeks UN ceasefire resolution that ended 34 days of ferocious fighting between Israel and Hezbollah.
Israel repeatedly attacked Lebanons roads, bridges and border crossings during the month-long war, saying it wanted to halt the transfer of weapons to Hezbollah, allegedly by Syria and Iran.
The military official said the army plan covers an estimated 60 illegal border crossings with Syria in northern and eastern Lebanon.

Exactly. Most of the Rocket Launchers that Israel blew up were from Iran.

I'm still of the opinion that we should take them out, and now. But, would that be the start of Armageddon?

Oh,yah...Lebanon's Army will put everything they have into that effort. And it's *sure* to succeed.

The Lebanese are going to stop the Hizzies from getting arms from Syria and Iran? Oh ya. I believe this. sarc.
That's like putting a wolf at the henhouse door to keep out wolves. Paleez.

Iran has no borders with Lebanon.

Nice thought but what about Iran? Are you talking about the Really Big Tunnel? The only routes into Lebanon are by sea, by air or through Syria or Israel.

I just looked at a map of Lebanon. I'm trying to find the border Lebanon shares with Iran. Maybe you can help me.
(I realise that Syria is a proxy for Iran, but that's already addressed ...)

Any personnel manning these post will either be Hezbollah plants or intimidated Lebanese who will say traffic through their checkpoints is only food and medicine. This operation has all the teeth and meaning of the useless UN resolutions.

"Lebanons army has begun setting up checkpoints near dozens of illegal border crossings with Syria and Israel in a bid to help prevent arms smuggling in the region," I'm wondering why they would be looking for arms smugglers coming from Israel? Most of those weapons are coming in airborn with the fuses set...

Cutting off the arms of all Hezbollah members would be a step in the right direction. Of course they could still put on their suicide vests and claim, "It's only a flesh wound", but at least they would be easy to spot.

These are really bribe collection checkpoints.

"These are really bribe collection checkpoints."
That was my first thought too.
