FL--No-shows batter beleaguered Harris
Orlando Sentinel ^ | 8/18/06 | Jim Stratton

HIGHLIGHTS (cannot quote full article):

Katherine Harris' attempt to boost her campaign with a series of high-profile endorsements wilted Thursday when none of the officials appeared at her campaign rally and one of them said Harris wrongly included him on her list of supporters.

State Sen. Daniel Webster, R-Winter Garden, said he has not endorsed Harris and instead is supporting one of her challengers, Orlando attorney Will McBride.

...

Webster said he had no idea why Harris listed him as one of her supporters. He said he never endorsed her.

Harris insisted that Webster promised to attend her rally Thursday at Orlando Executive Airport.

"They called back twice and said he'd be here," Harris said. "He said he was going to be here on the stage with me today."

Webster's office said he had never confirmed his attendance.

...

Harris spoke in an airplane hangar that seemed to highlight the modest size of the crowd. She said a last-minute location change -- required because a tree fell on the hangar where the event was supposed to be held -- kept crowd numbers down.

Airport officials, however, said no hangar had been damaged by a tree and that the rally was in the hangar that had been originally booked.

...

Earlier this week, U.S. Reps. Mark Foley, Ginny Brown-Waite, Jeff Miller and Cliff Stearns all appeared on Harris' site.

Thursday, they were gone.

A spokesman for Foley said his boss had never endorsed Harris in the primary.

I think Harris is a good person and certainly better than the Democrat currently in office. I also think she's not playing the party line and the deck is stacked against her.

What a shame it turned out this way. That seat could have been won. We definitely could have used the gain in Fl to offset almost certain GOP losses elsewhere. If the Senate ends up 50-50, or even worse 49R-51D, the Republicans should be kicking themselves.

Yep. I am amazed that there isn't a single Republican Senate candidate with a prayer of winning. Unbelievable.

Harris COULD have had a chance if the Party Poohbahs had not decided to sabotage her at every turn.

I would not be surprised if what happened as described in this story is entirely made up of dirty tricks. Phony phone calls can work wonders. When you don't have somebody good watching your back these kinds of things happen in politics.

Jeb needs to throw his hat into the ring like former governor Bob Graham did it back in 1986. He'd definately win.

I'm not sure it's dirty tricks. Maybe it is, but there just seems to be way too much of this. She may have the right ideas and conservative values, but she seems to be an awful politician.

And from what I can see she's the best Republican running... which is sad.

In Michigan, we had a choice between Butler, whom I beleve to be a conservative and POLITICAL man-about-town Bouchard. One was endorsed by the GOP establishment (and the Detroit News, which I will be shucking shortly) and won.

We will probably maintain the staus quo with Stabenow being reelected. We briefly had a GOP Senator, Spencer Abraham (also a GOP establishment darling, in fact was head of the Michigan GOP) However, his effectiveness as Senator, Senatorial incumbent candidate, and later Engergy Secretary, is somewhat questionable.

What did she do to piss off the party "bosses"?

The are running NO ONE?

There are three total primary candidates and NO ONE has the party blessing?

Are you suggesting that the national GOP is not only not endorsing Harris but actively using a dirty tricks campaign to keep her down?

I went to the article, and found this:

Harris spoke in an airplane hangar that seemed to highlight the modest size of the crowd. She said a last-minute location change -- required because a tree fell on the hangar where the event was supposed to be held -- kept crowd numbers down.

Airport officials, however, said no hangar had been damaged by a tree and that the rally was in the hangar that had been originally booked.

So what's up with that? Are the airport officials just evil Democrats looking to sabotage Mrs. Harris's campaign?

I wish the newspaper has a good reason for editorializing in it's coverage.
