Hello fellow Medved fans,
I saw Michael Medved Thursday night, August 17, 2006 here in Aurora, Colorado. This was a free event put on by the radio station 710 KNUS, and I believe Townhall.com. Bill Bennett is on line for a September appearance.
Before the show, Michael Medved signed my Right Turns book again (saw him last year too), but this time he addressed the autograph to my husband. I was too tongue tied to do much talking with him, but my husband talked with him for a minute. Medved said his wife, Diane, is in the process of writing another book, and he is thinking about writing another one. I also got a picture of him with my regular camera but will have to wait and post that one.
The show commenced on time at 7:00 p.m. and lasted just about two hours. He spent the first part talking about why America is hated around the world. Here's a brief outline:
The second part was questions from the audience. He said this part was to be more like his Open Mind Friday.
Here are some of my notes from the second half:
Family is the enemy of big government and vice versa.
On August 16, 2006 he was in Copper Mountain, Colorado. He and his wife were two of the speakers for the Jewish Learning Institute. He said more and more Jews are becoming Republicans.
He said Ms. magazine was recently promoting abortion hoping to get stars on board to say they've had an abortion (and I guess are proud of it). He believes they are worried that abortions have dropped in the country and are trying to gin up support for it by having celebrities endorse it.
He thinks Israel won the latest battle although it wasn't a perfect victory.
He thinks illegal immigration needs to be at least slowed - at best stopped. He believes the economy requires the additional labor that's already here. He wants neither amnesty nor deportation.
He said Olmert is known as a "smart lawyer" in Israel. He said Israel had a plan that could have done serious damage to Hezbollah but Olmert was afraid to do it because of world response. He believes Israel will have a new government in a few weeks and Netanyahu will be the head of it.
He said the U.S. is currently pumping American dollars into Pakistan to fund secular education (this was in reference to a woman that said she had lived in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and how the children are steeped in the hatred for us from the time they are very little). The woman was kind of an odd woman. She wasn't very articulate and her question went on a bit too long, but Medved seemed very interested in what she had to say. She sort of had an exotic look to her and when she walked past our table after her statement/question her perfume smelled very nice.
He also stated that the countries we have helped the most tend to be the most anti-American.
One questioner made a comment that people who are afraid of being judgmental are "morally phobic". Medved liked that phrase.
He believes the mid-terms are looking grim but not totally hopeless. He thinks the Senate will be fine but the House is going to be a problem. He said Republicans need to pull together and defeat the enemy--Nancy Pelosi.
One questioner mentioned Medved's father and Medved said his dad had been cut from the scientist/astronaut program with NASA because of gum disease. His dad was one of two that were cut. I think this was back in the 70's but not sure. He said his dad just turned 80.
Another questioner mentioned George Washington and he recommended three books about him. I only caught the names of two:
He said the latter book is as riveting as any Tom Clancy book.
Medved stated that the people that listen to his show on a most regular basis (I believe he referred to them as P1's) are Democrats. He doesn't like the term Culture Wars - he thinks we should be trying to convert people to our way of thinking. War sounds like we are trying to destroy them.
Someone asked about the justice system (I think they were referring to judicial activism but Medved talked about crime). He said more people are being locked up for longer sentences and NY City is now considered the safest big city in the world--less crime than London and Paris.
A lady mentioned the movies United 93 and the World Trade Center. He said United 93 was a great movie and the World Trade Center was a fine movie despite Oliver Stone being the director.
Another person asked about media bias. He believes media manipulation has and can be overcome through internet resources and radio resources.
A gentleman mentioned the problems we face in the U.S.--invasion from the South, Islamonazis, China, and even Russia. Medved said the world has always been a dangerous place and that freedom isn't cheap nor is it free. He thinks Russia is doing pretty good economically. He praised their 13% flat tax but as noted by the questioner and a person that Medved knows that has been in Russia, there is a dark cloud looming over the country. He hopes Putin will leave office at the end of his term.
Lastly, he mentioned Joe Lieberman. Medved said he is very good friends with someone that is unofficially working for the Joe Lieberman campaign. Someone that has been on his show many times. I knew right away that he was speaking of Lanny Davis. He said he couldn't say who it was but slipped (intentionally or not?) with the name Lanny when he was talking about it. Everyone laughed. According to Medved, Joe Lieberman is really ticked off at his "friends" in the Senate that backstabbed him. He is hurt and angry. It sounded like if Joe gets back in the Senate he will be in no mood to cooperate with his old buddies.
Somewhere along the way someone mentioned if KNUS would consider switching Medved from 1650 to 710 (right now Hannity is on 710). The guy next to me shouted out, "All those in favor say "aye" and the crowd very happily approved of the idea. KNUS management was there--not sure if they got the message or not.
A couple of times during the speech he mentioned that after the show he would be screening what is sure to be a classic "Snakes on a Plane". I don't think he was looking forward to it.
That's about it. It was fun. I'm not a regular listener of Bill Bennett, but I think we will go to that one too. Missed Hugh Hewitt's talk in July.

Just wanted to let you know Medved got in a dig at Savage. I can't remember the exact context, but it was something sarcastic about Medved sacrificing for us, his auidience, just like Savage does for his.
If you could have asked Medved a question, what would you have asked?
Thanks a bunch. I almost called him when he was talking about Mel Gibson a few weeks ago - and that Mel was looking for ways to learn from/reach out to the Jewish Community. Medved then went on to a promo about the Copper Mountain thing. I thought that would have been perfect for Mel - except to bring unwanted intrusive attention to the event.
Did you get to see Medved last night?
I haven't heard all of what Medved has said about Gibson. What do you think he thinks about it? Medved really was pro-Passion and even had Gibson on his show at least once. It seems like he was disappointed from what I heard him say but not in anguish about it.
Asking him about Gibson would have been a good question.
I like Medved a lot and listen to his show often (today I split Medved and Jerry Doyle).
If I could ask him one question, I'd ask him what the heck he is talking about with Savage sacrificing? Haha!
Forgot to mention, when Medved was speaking about George Washington he talked about a letter Washington had wrote in which he expressed his biggest regret--never having children of his own. Medved made the point that here is a man with not one living descendant yet he is the father to all American citizens.
No, because one of my colleagues had already asked for the overnight shift off I had no choice, but to show up at work tonight.
Thanks for the first hand report!
Sorry about that. Maybe you can catch Bennett in September.
Nice write-up, beaversmom! :)
Interesting about Washington. I always enjoy his special shows on history.
Thank you Eveningstar.
