Democratic challenger Phil Angelides, facing the governor's rebound in the polls, tries to cast himself as a Clinton populist
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has built his re-election campaign on a platform of "protecting the California dream." But this week his challenger, Democratic State Treasurer Phil Angelides, laid out his own dream theme, with a populist bent.
Trailing Schwarzenegger in the latest statewide Field poll by 8 points, Angelides signaled in a speech Wednesday that his strategy for catching up will include attacking the incumbent's record, tying Schwarzenegger to George W. Bush and positioning himself as a champion of the beleaguered middle class, in the Bill Clinton mold. "The promise of California was a birthright of the many, not a privilege of the few," Angelides said
The Governor's campaign contends that the total tax bill for the Angelides agenda will be more than three times that and called his tax-cut plan a disguise. Just as Angelides was finishing his speech, Schwarzenegger held a press event with tax-cut advocates, reiterating his pledge not to raise taxes and touting his tax-relief record. "I will not raise taxes on the people of California in my second term--period," he said."Thanks to the car-tax repeal and workers' compensation reform, we put more than $12 billion back into the economy so that people and businesses can save, invest and build."

Sen. Clinton said, "Many of you are well enough off that ... the tax cuts may have helped you. We're saying that for America to get back on track, we're probably going to cut that short and not give it to you. We're going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good."
Ah, yet another DNC campaign strategy position paper packaged as a "news story."
I know a lot of you think Arnold a RINO, but I will put up with social liberalism for fiscal conservatism.
Arnold saved California. And if we can get McClintock as Lt. Guv, we'll be much, much better.
I will vote for Arnold, because the alternative is terrible. I will have to hold my nose and hope that puke will not negate the ballot but I will vote for Arnold.
You got a Clinton special cigar for that?
yeah
Leave it to Time magazine to promote this leftist scumbag.
So would I, but Arnold has given us neither. To balance the books he has relied on more and more bond borrowing and public debt. We and our children be paying for his creative book keeping for decades. California's governor has the power to simply sit down and cross off items in the budget at will. A true fiscal conservative would reduce spending in times of fiscal crisis.
The notion of a social liberal who is a true fiscal conservative is a myth. I have never seen one and I never will.
You know, I'd like to see Phil try. I don't mean I want to see him try to put a winning campaign together. I'm going to see that anyway. No, I mean I want to see him try to physically beat Arnold. Arnold may not be in Mr. Olympia form any more, but I bet he's still in good enough shape to put a serious hurtin' on that pencil-neck.
There is going to be a lot of this going on this fall...nationwide.
And what do you think Phil Angelides will give us????!!!!
Why do you keep campaigning for Angelides so hard?
And he and Al Gore are going to save the world! Go ARnold!
I think Jack Bauer has actually saved the world...so take that.
Please !!!! I live in California. Sorry, but those of you who don't live here have no dog in this fight. Thanks for your interest, but it's really up to us out here.
Arnold has ONE ROLE over the next four years, and that is to VETO every piece of nonsense coming out of the 60% Democratic-controlled Legislature. If he does nothing else until 2011, that's fine with me.
Mc Clintock in the 2010 race. Until then, just veto, Arnold.
If I were campaigning for someone it would be abundantly obvious. You, on the other hand mention the guy's name more than anyone on FreeRepublic.
ANGELIDES is the guy to defeat -- YOU keep working on defeating Arnold.
Purely, repetitively boring nonsense... but of course you knew that... yawn...
