PRAGUE, Czech Republic Astronomers are stepping up the global effort to scan the skies for "near-Earth objects": asteroids and comets on a potential collision course with the planet and big enough to pack a deadly punch.
The International Astronomical Union said Thursday it has set up a special task force to broaden and sharpen its focus on impact threats.

It's not gonna matter at this point anyway. If there really is a killer asteroid I plan on sitting by the lake in the lawn chair to watch the end of mankind.

Voyager 1 is 100 AU from the sun this week. Amazing it got all the way out there without getting hit by some of those many and proliferating killer asteroids.

Have they set up a web site to accept donations yet?
Are they submitting forms for international grants?
Are they asking for billionaire endowments?
How are they going to get the word out without major finacial backing? This worries me.

"Task Force" = A group that will employ scaremongering in an effort to obtain funding from the federal government to keep its group members employed.

You don't think there are any earth crossing orbit asteroids left? If humankind can detect and divert such a killer impact, don't you think we ought to try to accomplish it?

...but there was a probe nearby to witness the comet Schumaker-Levy 9 plunge into Jupitor. What a sight. Imagine. The first time in history man has witnessed that. And we have pictures.

I think, and have long said on FR, we ought to capture such an asteroid. Perhaps put it into earth orbit, smash it into the moon, or put it into the L4 or L5 point. Whatever it is made of will come in handy some day.
