Its true - its a disaster. But as a theater of the absurd sideshow, Israel has never had a funnier government. When it comes to a Woody Allen slapstick, Ehud Olmert, Amir Peretz and Tzippy Livi came straight out of Central Casting and played their ineptness to Academy Award-winning performance levels. Its the kind of Comedy from Chelm that leaves Israelis laughing themselves to death.

(No more Olmert! No more Kadima! No more Oslo!)

In the long run this debacle is a painful but good thing for Israel. Weak leadership and poor tactics would be a lot more costly later if the Iranian situation goes critical.

July 30th I posted: "It won't end for a while yet but it looks to me like Hezballah wins this round. The Israelis pulled their punches and even so the world is ready to rein them in. The Israeli PM was sold on an air campaign by his Air Force and that doesn't defeat guerillas."

Don't overfocus on the PM. The high command screwed this up every bit as much as the political leadership did. Fifty years of military institutional memory disregarded.

The silver lining though is Israel will have a thorough shakeout of the high command now. Israel is a state that learns from its mistakes, and perhaps just in time.

Israel is now run by a gang of Jimmy Carters. Intelligent Jews should start making plans to get out. I hope the US has a liberal immigration policy for Israelis. That's my big hope now. I don't have high hopes for the survival of Israel. Not with a gang of Peanuts in charge.

One has to ask - what would the outcome have been if Sharon were in power?

Unfortunately this is not Comedy Central, this is life and death, certainly to the Israeli soldiers who already have died or will die because of these slack-jawed yokels.

The real horror is that tomorrow, next week, next month Israel may be forced to go to war with these buffoons still in office.

New elections do not have to be called before March, 2010. The only way these jokers can be removed, short of their voluntary resignations, is a vote of no confidence. After a vote of no confidence new elections would come much sooner.

After this the debacle the leftist Knesset members that support the government can expect a slaughter at the polls. So they have a choice - face the voters or support the government and stay in the Knesset until 2010. Maybe their electoral chances will improve with time.

Other people with more familiarity with Israeli politics will have to analyze the odds in favor of the government surviving the coming month, the coming year, until 2010. I can't.

Israel may be saddled with these morons for a long time.
