UK Home Secretary John Reid has said Europe faces a "persistent and very real" threat from terrorism, after a meeting with EU counterparts in London.
But he said the presence of five other interior ministers and top EU officials symbolised Europe's determination to stand together and defend their values.

Mr Reid said the European Union needed to develop its counter-terror policies in response to the evolving threat.
He said the talks had discussed practical measures in four areas:
* Tackling liquid explosives
* Co-ordination of transport security
* Exchange of intelligence
* The nature of European Islam
The world was faced by a form of "intolerant and violent totalitarianism", he added, which was subverting a religion, Islam, whose very name stood for peace.

He also called for a crackdown on internet sites used to incite terrorism.
Veto move
The 7 July bombings in London last year pushed counter-terrorism up the EU agenda, and helped former Home Secretary Charles Clarke clinch a deal to force companies to retain telephone and e-mail data for use in investigations.
We came to the conclusion that a united Europe will win the battle with the terrorists Finnish Interior Minister Kari Rajamaeki The European Commission is currently trying to persuade governments to give up their veto powers in the area of criminal justice, arguing that it will help the anti-terrorism effort.

"That is important because the threat is an enduring threat and will require therefore an enduring response," Mr Reid said.
Europe was up against people who were abusing its open society and its freedoms and adapting the latest technology to their "evil intent", he said.

"* The nature of European Islam
of course it is the nature of Islam itself (yes all of Islam) that is of concern.
Better late than never.
Just dialog with the terrorist - problem solved.
You think the badly timed demands which were more like veiled threats from the Brit Muslims regarding changing foreign policy, implementation of Sharia law, and making Muslim holidays public have anything to do with this?
He said the talks had discussed practical measures in four areas:
* Tackling liquid explosives
* Co-ordination of transport security
* Exchange of intelligence
* The nature of European Islam
* And closing down every terrorist training camp, uh er, Mosque.
Hmmm. Defend Europe's "values?" And what would those values be? Diversity? Tolerance? Wonderful, lofty, content-free notions.
In time Europe will face more and more threats from terrorism.
let's start by calling terrorist terrorist, symbolizing? The UN symbolizes...it does nothing but symbolize
Doogle

So, will the bureaucrats sit around and figure out how to NOT insult Islam.
This morning on CNN "Abu Jihad" said if you insult the honor of muslims the Koran says to send them to the cemetary. After all they are not Christians.
Or Nueva Mexicana. Most Mexicans refuse to assimilate and the conditions that are in Europe with their Muslim populations are in beginning here with our Mexican population..
In Europe and America, close down all mosques and deport all muslims.
You nailed it; Islam really does stand for "peace", but in Islamic theology, "peace" will only be achieved when Islam and sharia law make the whole world "submit".
So they really can claim to be a religion of "peace", even as their intent is a devious lie.
When I was young I used to visit the mosque on Massachusetts Avenue in Washington, D.C., and talk to the clerics there.
Islam means "submission to God." Sorry, no mention of peace. A lot of submitting, though, starting with the way to pray (on your knees, forehead to the floor) and ending with your attitude toward the Koran (follow the word of God unaltered and unabridged for all eternity). It's peaceful in it's own way, but it has nothing to do with living harmoniously with other people of different beliefs..
