You pay suspects' bill

By TOM WELLS FAMILIES of the bottle bomb terror suspects are being put up in hotel rooms costing taxpayers thousands of pounds. Relatives of 24 arrested last week have been turfed out of their homes to make way for police forensic teams. And dozens have been given the keys to hotel rooms in London and Buckinghamshire. Cops are still combing 46 addresses, including shops and businesses in East London and High Wycombe, Bucks. News of the hotel stays comes just two days after The Sun told how brothers Abdul Kahar, 23, and Abul Koyair, 21, landed taxpayers with a £50,000 bill following the police raid on their home in Forest Gate, East London, in June. The pair scoffed £1,300-worth of food in 24 hours and ran up £800-a-day phone bills when they were put up at two luxury hotels in central London. Police refused to comment on the cost of the families stays. A Scotland Yard spokesman would only say: When people have to leave their homes during a police investigation, they are placed in temporary alternative accommodation. you you know where the relatives are staying? I honestly don't know whether the same thing is done here in the USA or not....but giving them an open-ended telephone and food tab seems a bit excessive, as well as what sounds like high-end hotels from the article's description.
I think that if suspects' families were put up in high-end hotels with unlimited food and telephone priviledges we would have heard about it by now.

Oh, I see what you mean now... I guess in many places they might get a motel room if the cops are keeping them from home.

I would be interested to hear about how some of our FReepers from the UK feel about having their hard-earned tax dollars going to pay for 'luxury accommodations' for families of people who tried to murder thousands of their countrymen and women.
And to answer your questions I would say yes, quite likely and I'm sorry I have no idea.

Put them in The Tower of London, with authentic medieval accomodations! That sounds fine with me, but they would probably sue the Government there for some form of emotional distress or racism or something or other.

Would it even be possible to spend that much money in ONE DAY on telephone charges unless they were calling some sort of "rent a harlot" service?

Would it even be possible to spend that much money in ONE DAY on telephone charges unless they were calling some sort of "rent a harlot" service? Hmmm, £800-a-day would be £33 1/3 per hour, £.56 per minute. Maybe that's the going rate for a goat phone sex hotline? Perhaps they listen to goat noises on a speakerphone 24/7.

Oh well half of what they spend will go back to the government anyway!
Seeing as the principle is innocent until proven guilty, I dont think these people can be turfed out on the street. But why they have to be in hotels where they are able to spend £1,300 on food in 24 hours, I do not know.

Not happy of course; but I do have to take into account the fact that The Sun is not exactly the best journal of record.

Your breakdown makes it seem entirely feasible...I have no doubt that calling Yemen from the room phone at an upscale London hotel might run several pounds per minute....aren't the rates for the Airphones on planes something like $10. / minute ? I stand corrected, I can see how even a days' worth of heavy terror-plotting on the phone with Ahmed in Tehran might run up a bill like that.
As to the goat noises 24/7, that's quite likely too....those poor terrorists are probably lonely.

easily, UK hotel international telephone charges approach the bizarre and extortionate.
