Romney vetoes bill to create statewide pre-kindergarten programs

BOSTON --Gov. Mitt Romney vetoed a bill Friday that would have moved Massachusetts closer to universal pre-kindergarten, saying the program could end up costing taxpayers as much as $1 billion a year. The bill would have created a statewide pre-kindergarten program defined as "voluntary, universally accessible early education and care programs and services for preschool-aged children." Romney said the state should instead wait to see the results of a smaller $4.6 million pre-kindergarten test program before embarking on the more ambitious statewide initiative. "Before we create an expensive new burden on Massachusetts taxpayers, one that could lead to future tax increases, we ought to await the results of the pilot program, particularly as it relates to the cost of a large scale operation," Romney said.

I meant to post this when it came out and I blogged about it here and herehere . . . . but I've had a busy last week.

Now I'm glad I waited since a great piece was written at National Review Online lauding Romney for this stance that protects money and children from state control!

If he meant to protect money and children from state control then how, and why, did the pilot program come into existence?

only 13% of Mass residents are registered Republicans. 85% of the legislature is Democrat. Romney does what he can, when he can.

How did the pilot program come into existence?

The same way other social liberal programs come into existence in heavily leftist states: they metastasize from the original liberal tumor.

Romney is not a miracle worker. No Republican could accomplish more than he has in that state.

"Before we create an expensive new burden on Massachusetts taxpayers....

???

I am confused. Why would Massachusetts taxpayers care about paying more taxes? Aren't these the people (AKA "Mass-holes") who overwhelmingly elect and re-elect and re-elect Kennedy and Kerry and always vote for the Democrat Presidential candidate?

Romney never should have vetoed this bill. Massachusetts clearly supports the Democrat agenda of turning America into a French-style, secular-socialist welfare state, so let the Democrats turn Massachusetts into one first. You know - - as a "pilot program".

Did Romney, or did he not, approve of the pilot program? From his words in the article it appears he isn't against it as he's awaiting to see how well it goes...before expanding it.

"voluntary, universally accessible early education and care programs and services for preschool-aged children."

Oh sure it's "voluntary".
