Ohio State Representative Bob Ney formally requested that his name be removed from the November election ballot.
A special primary must now be held to find a replacement.
Ney first made the announcement a week ago, citing the strain of an intensifying corruption investigation that had focused for months on his dealings with lobbyists.
The six-term congressman denies any wrongdoing and has not been charged.
Democrats targeted Ney's seat in the wake of the Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal.
Ney's campaign began hemorrhaging money after his former chief of staff pleaded guilty to corrupting the congressman and the justice department subpoenaed Ney aides in Ohio and Washington.
Democrats now hope the opening in Ney's 18th District will help them gain one of the 15 seats they need this fall to take control of the House.
The Abramoff connection, other Republican scandals in Ohio, and the biased media in Ohio will make keeping this Republican seat a challenge
Do we know yet who is running against Joy Padgett?
Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal How come NO Democrats are getting punched out since they had more people getting money from him than Republicans? OH! I get it the media does not print stories about its Gods.
He's not within 80 days, so they can't just appoint Padgett.
But, I'll bet they're passing word that they'll not support anyone but her.
There's a legal issue on her candidacy because of an Ohio law prohibiting being on the ballot if one has already lost a primary election. Not for this seat, but she was Petro's running mate for LtGov and they lost.
I'd think that applied to the same office, but who knows in Ohio.
Are you going to stay around for the answer?
I know that they couldn't just appoint Padgett, my question is if we know who is running against her in the primary.
As for the "sore loser" law issue, I think it's pretty clear that it doesn't apply to (i) a race for another contest or (ii) a special primary, since it was meant to prohibit someone from running as an independent or by petition (write-in) for a certain position after having lost the primary.
Was talking to some "insiders" yesterday, who think Padgett will have no trouble "becoming" the nominee---that various OH rules will be interpreted so as to let her run. Don't know the Dem opponent yet.

Please see the Washington Post article above. Since it is from a left-wing Democrat Newspaper it is somewhat biased. The primary Democrats that received large sums of money were:
H. Reid
T Daschle
P. Kennedy
The Democrat Senator from Washington State and many more.
"Don't know the Dem opponent yet."
I heard mention of one other GOP name, but I believe the gentleman opted out, so I think this one is pretty much a lock for Padgett. They don't want to risk screwing this up.
