Blair's shorts draw national headlines

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- Dissatisfied with Prime Minister Tony Blair's response to Britain's increased terror alert, a newspaper decided his vacation attire should speak for him.

The Australian paper The Age reported that the prime minister's eye-catching shorts were the featured headline of Britain's The Mail on Sunday, a move that indicates a growing public dissatisfaction with Blair's decision to remain on vacation in Barbados during a national crisis.

"Bold and Defiant. Well, the trunks are," read the paper's Sunday headline.

"This was the prime minister yesterday, sunning himself in his lurid swimwear on board the catamaran Good Vibrations as, apparently untroubled by world events, he continued with his family in the Caribbean," the Mail added in the accompanying article.

With all of Britain moving into its fourth day of a heightened terror alert, many have openly criticized Blair and some have compared his response to that of U.S. President George W. Bush, The Age said.

Reads like Maureen Dowd, without teeth.

This is the same crap the media pulled on President Bush over 9-11. Aren't they allowed to have a vacation? IF they didn't pick at him for this, they would find something else to cry about!!

They are taking their lessons from the US media when they tried to rip our president on being at the ranch during Katrina.

Blair's wife and family went ahead of him while he finished wrestling with the terrorist investigation. The media wants to remind the people they need someone to hold their hand AFTER a crisis is over.

Thought you might be interested in this Wolf. One of the worst things said about Blair in this article is "his LURID swimwear" LOL

They tried this with Bush during Katrina.

They pretend not to understand the concept of a working vacation.

President Bush is handed a map by Deputy Chief of Staff Joe Hagin during a video teleconference with federal and state emergency management organizations on hurricane Katrina from his Crawford ranch, August 28, 2005. The President approved major disaster declarations for the states of Louisiana and Mississippi, clearing the way for the use of federal money to help respond to Hurricane Katrina, the White House said. In addition, the President urged the governor of Louisiana and mayor or New Orleans to issue mandatory evacuation orders.

Thanks for the ping, daybreak...the media never fail to amuse. They create an issue or complaint, then follow up with stories about growing public dissatisfaction. They are nothing if not predictable.

Never seems to occur to them that, with modern communications, leaders like President Bush and Prime Minister Blair are never truly on vacation. Leaders are instantly available to make decisions, and their availability is not dependant on their pysical location in the world. This is 2006, not 1906.

Isn't it something like 4-6 weeks sailing time from England to Barbados? That means it takes at least an 8 week turn around time to send information to Prime Minister Blair and get a response back. By that time the Spanish Armada could have set sail and attacked or the Netherlands could have conquered another spice island.

What part of instant voice and video communication and a 5 hour flight to get back if it would matter does the media not understand?
