I think today through Wed are Buddhist holidays in Japan, so many companies are not working. Not sure if this is good or bad from a blackout point of view...

It will be 9 am Tomorrow - Monday. They're about 17 hours ahead of us. This will be killing them during their rush hour commute.

Where'd you get that pic? I remember Rummy mentioning N. Korea being in the dark since the country spends all of its resources on its military.

Power cut off in wide areas of Tokyo

TOKYO - A power outage hit wide swaths of Tokyo and nearby Chiba early Monday, halting train service in some areas, news reports said. It was not immediately clear what caused the power to be cut off.

At least two elevators stopped in central Tokyo with an unspecified number of people inside in the blackout, according to Tokyo fire official Keisuke Hayashi. He could not provide other details, saying officials were investigating the extent of the damage.

Media reports said that several trains services were halted. Japan was in the middle of a holiday, and the number of passengers during the morning rush hour was fewer than usual.

Public broadcaster NHK said that about 670,000 houses and other buildings were without power as of 8:15 a.m. local time.

I guess we could ask one of the FReepers with Japanese connections, TigerlikesRooster or AmericaninTokyo. One of them might be able to give an insight if they are not in the blackout area right now.

TOKYO, Aug 14 (Reuters) - Power outages in large areas of Tokyo and surrounding areas darkened offices, halted some rail services and disrupted traffic early on Monday.

The outages started around 7:40 a.m. (2240 GMT on Sunday) as commuters headed to work, although many offices were lightly staffed due summer holidays.

Power company officials were not immmediately available to explain the cause.

The Tokyo Stock Exchange said it was checking if trading would start as usual at 9:00 a.m. (0000 GMT).
