Navarrette: What really bothers immigration foes
CNN ^ | By Ruben Navarrette Jr.

Posted on 08/13/2006 2:38:50 PM PDT by SmoothTalker

"They've said all along that all they care about is that border security be the first priority of any immigration reform plan and that illegal immigrants not be given amnesty. They insisted that they aren't motivated by racism and that they have no problem with immigrants, if they are here legally."

"Anti-amnesty Republicans in Congress come in three flavors. There are the opportunists who view the issue as red meat that will inspire GOP voters in November. There are the nativists who are frightened over how Latinos affect the culture and who have taken it on as their crusade to reverse that trend. And there are the pragmatists who are willing to work for a bipartisan agreement that fixes a broken immigration system."

"The Hutchison-Pence plan forces the anti-amnesty crowd to level finally with the rest of us about what really bothers them. If it is that people are here illegally, or that the border isn't secure, then the plan has that covered. But if it's the fear that Anglo-Saxon culture and the English language are being eroded by Spanish-speaking foreigners, and that the country is going down the tubes because of it -- then this plan doesn't offer much relief.

After all, under it, the immigrants get to be legal, but they also get to stay. For some people, that's the real problem. As far as those people are concerned, the Hutchison-Pence plan doesn't offer much comfort.

What it does offer is something this debate could use more of: clarity. "

Navarette is a reverse racist.
He always takes the side of the Hispanics, even if they here illegally, are criminals, and carry 13 kinds of uncurable diseases.

There is another group to which I belong, and that is that we enforce our laws to stop the very great harm that is being done to the American Taxpayer throough the massive use of social programs by illegals, and which we maust all pay for without any assistance from the country that is exxporting its poverty to us. I have no say in this, even if I vote, becuase there is no one in the enforcement area that is taking this issue seriously.

If we don't have to honor laws that we choose, because the seem so important that we don't, then do I get to pick and choose which laws I get to ignore?

If the border was secure, I think many in my position would welcome additional legal workers if they were allowed to enter in the way all other immigrants in all other generations have come.

The key is keeping things legal and if the law requires legally admitted immigrants to harvest crops, then so be it. But not illegally, so they can smuggle in drugs, a criminal culture, and terrorists along with those who soak up our tax dollars demanding the right to fly the Mexican flag here, while receiving medical treatment free of charge.

They don't want to be Americans, and they don't even like us. They just want our money. That's why its $3.50 for gringos to buy pop in Cancun.

Agreed, it is a load of c#_%! to suggest that this countries citizen's desires for a secure boarder is motivated by racism.

Our native born are the most diverse and accepting of other cultures on the planet, we have accepted with open arms all cultures, we have made laws to protect discrimination, we teach our schools in many languages, as well as government documents.

These anti US sovereignty invasion apologists need only look at their own cultures to find racism and intolerance of immigrants. It's like the old cliché of blaming others for your own faults, the racism charge is officially bogus, they need to get over it...

Hmmm...I thought one of the big selling points Pence was pushing was
that all the illegals "would have to leave the country" before re-admittance.

Has Navarette told us that Pence hasn't told us the whole story of
his plan?
Such as "leaving the country" means an "in-and-out" trip to the
local consulate of their home country?

Why would Pence tell us the truth anymore than other members of Congress or the media?

I just wrote at the email address I found:

Nobody opposes legal immigration.

The vast majority of the anti-amnesty crowd are people who simply want the government to enforce the law and to respect national soveriegnty. They also worry about national security implications of our open borders.

It must have been hilarious to write a column about people without even mentioning this.

Ruben has written an article or two that reflect 'our' side of the issue fairly. However, the bulk of his work is like this article.

reuben loses track of what his 'job' is occasionally; "reconquista" , hence an occasional slip 'happens' as you mentioned.

It's funny how Navarrette never even mentioned the Pence proposal in any of his pieces until it was modified to allow only guest workers from NAFTA and CAFTA countries. After the modification, he suddenly started saying nice things about it.

He's lying about the Pence plan. It has at least one amnesty in it, and probably two or three the way I reckon it.

I am so disgusted by this whole freaking illegal immigration thing I could scream!!! Our newspaper, the AJC, just published the school reports, our cluster USED to be in the top 10, in the past 4 years or so, Gwinnett County has seen the biggest influx of illegals than any other in the state. We didn't even make the top 50. Trailers everywhere eating up playground space, behavior problems left and right. And talk to anyone who teaches and they all say the same thing. They spend more time trying to mainstream these kids than teach to the rest of the class. If all of these pro-illegal writers are so concerned with the poor, why don't they shine a light on the corrupt politicians in these countries that refuse to take care of their own. And ya know what, you're damn skippy I'm a nativist and I am not one bit embarrassed by the name. I am an American citizen, I love this country and I will not sit by and let it turn into a turd world country. The arogance is infuriating. How dare these criminals come into my house and tell me what I'm going to have to do to make their life more comfortable. My sister-in-law is from Germany, she speaks perfect english, and is a trained NURSE, something this country needs way more than landscapers, and it cost a fortune to be here legally. Insanity!!!!!!!
