Mackinac Bridge; Alleged Target Of Terror
Aug 13, 2006 10:47 AM EDT
(TV5) -- We are following breaking news today after it was revealed that the goal of an alleged terror plot, uncovered in Mid-Michigan, was apparently to hit the Mackinac Bridge.
The suspects are 21 year old Adham Abdelhamid Othman, 18 year old Maruan Awad Muhareb, and 23 year old Louai Abdelhamied Othman; all are apparently from Texas.
All have been charged with one count each of collecting and providing material support for terrorism; and one count of surveillance of a vulnerable target (that target allegedly being the Mackinac Bridge).
Tuscola County Prosecutor Mark Reene couldn't go into specific detail about what exactly was found relating to the target.
What we do know is the van driven by the men contained about one-thousand TracFones. These cell phones are used by terrorists because they are cheap and virtually untraceable.
The phones can be used to remotely detonate explosive devices, or event to make methamphetamine. The charges against these men are 20 year felonies. We have also learned the men will face no federal charges.

Somewhere in Time, eh? I wouldn't know the bridge -- I've only been up that way once.
amen.
The aesthetics of the Mackinac Bridge are unmatched. It rises up between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron in a pretty remote area. Thanks to the zebra mussel, the water is crystal clear and looks tropical from the bridge looking down. Most of northern lower Michigan and the Upper Peninsula is federal and state forests in addition to hundreds of thousands of forested acres ownded by lumber companies. On Labor Day some 65,000 people walk across the bridge including the Governor. In 2007 the bridge will be 50 years old! Lots of good reasons for the Islamofascists to destroy.
The Middle Eastern terrorist suspects reside in the Dallas area.....although a conservative city overall we have quite a few foreigners (and Latin illegals) who live here. Then again, what major USA city doesn't these days. Sorry Michigan that these creeps come from my city....glad they are caught. Looks like the terrorists have multiple acts planned in the future.
I don't think they wanted to drop the bridge but to kill all those 50-60 thousand walkers due to cross over it on September 4, 2006. That would cause a much higher body count than on 9/11. Just station about 200 suicide bombers among the walkers and it would be a carnage only bin Laden could dream about. Tens of thousands. They have how many Muslims in that area so they they wouldn't be suspicious.
How do those grates do in the snow? I'll bet the design is supposed to have the snow drop through the grating, keeping the roadway clear.
If it works, it's a great idea.
Moderate, non-violent Muslims are in a precarious position. God forbid if more terrorist acts trigger in the USA they will face a backlash from the public like never before even if undeserved due to affiliation. This may be a drastic statement but we may need to outlaw Islam and deport it's practitioners. Israel had to kick out the radical Palestinians to help prevent homicidal bombings.
Coming to the USA? Lets not pussy foot around with these maniacs from the death cult.
I've been across the bridge. You're right...it's beautiful. I'm just not sure that it's that much of a strategic target.
Maybe during the walk it could be a pretty big deal, but I just don't see it as a strategic target.
That's what makes me wonder how many other targets are planned. If they're going to go to the trouble to take out this bridge, they must be planning some more visible targeting.
Nikos, there's no bridge to Machinac Island. You either fly or boat to get there.
As there are no gangz in South Carolina, there is no terrorism in middle-America.
I doubt snow but think its for aerodynamics - to keep the bridge from flying in high winds - like Galloping Gertie did over the Tacoma Narrows.

What I haven't read, is why 1,000 cell phones were needed. Where they planning on making 1,000 remote control bombs? It seems it would be pretty difficult to conceal 1,000 bombs on the bridge. Any better ideas?
Excuse me, but I believe they are having some sort of walk-a -thon or something similar on that bridge today. That means about 65,000 people walking on the bridge. You wouldn't have to take the bridge down, a few well placed IEDs detonated by cell phone would do the trick, or detonated by a timing device made by cell phone chips, or by simply using the alarm feature of the phone to set it off.
