Nasrallah: We will abide by cease-fire ("We won! We defeated the invincible army.")
Jerusalem Post ^ | August 12, 2006

Posted on 08/12/2006 3:30:14 PM PDT by Shermy

Hizbullah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah said on Saturday that his organization would abide by the United Nations resolution calling for a cease-fire although he was not completely satisfied with its text.

Nasrallah's announcement came as the Lebanese government met in Beirut to accept the cease-fire.

Cease-fire analysis: Not so bad in theory

Nasrallah warned, however, that despite the UN resolution, the war was still not over. "We must be aware of the fact that the war will continue for another few days," he said. "That's why we are continuing to fight today. We will fight as long as Israeli soldiers are in Lebanon."

"We believe that the resolution that was taken last night was unfair," Nasrallah said. "But if there is an agreement on the cessation of hostilities between the Lebanese government and the enemy, we will observe it without delay."

He said that Hizbullah would support any decision by the Lebanese government to end the war. "We will not be an obstacle to any decision that it finds appropriate, but our ministers will express reservations about articles that we consider unjust and unfair," he said.

Nasrallah also expressed his support for plans to deploy Lebanese army and additional UNIFIL troops in southern Lebanon. "Regardless of our reservations and political positions, we will cooperate when the Lebanese soldiers and UNIFIL forces are deployed," he said.

Nasrallah described the decision to dispatch Lebanese soldiers to the south of the country as an "achievement" for Hizbullah and Lebanon, saying it resulted from the steadfastness of the Lebanese people and the "heroes" of his organization.

Nasrallah's speech was his ninth since the war broke out, forcing him and the top leadership of Hizbullah into hiding.

Hizbullah's Al-Manar TV, which continues to broadcast despite repeated IAF attack on its studios and transmitters, declared "victory" over the weekend, saying that the IDF had failed to score military achievements.

The broadcasts are being aired under the banner of: "We won!"; "We have defeated the invincible army"; and "July-August 2006 - the shattering of the myth [of the mighty Israeli army]." The station has also been airing video clips showing thousands of Lebanese hoisting Lebanese flags and chanting slogans in support of Hizbullah.

Like several other Arab television stations, Al-Manar has been repeatedly reminding viewers that this was the second "defeat" for Israel, coming after the IDF's May 2000 withdrawal from Lebanon.

Arab commentators and journalists were almost unanimous in saying that Hizbullah had won the war. Most of them pointed out the heavy casualties that Israel has suffered, as well as the destruction of a large number of Merkava tanks and the firing of rockets at many Israeli towns and cities.

Hussein Rahal, a spokesman for Hizbullah, told the Bethlehem-based Maan News Agency that his organization was "surprised by the weakness of the Israeli army." He added, "Our men remain in very high spirits and are continuing to inflict heavy losses on the enemy. The Israelis have lost both politically and militarily."

Arab and Muslim leaders reacted with cautious optimism to the UN resolution passed Friday. Jordanian Prime Minister Marouf Bakhit called it a critical "first step," while Turkey suggested that it could send peacekeeping troops to Lebanon.

The Arab League criticized the resolution for not clearly labeling Israel as the aggressor in the Lebanon conflict but said it was the best option to halt fighting that has claimed more than 850 lives in Lebanon.

"The resolution is the best that can be achieved in the meantime under the unbalanced international equation," said Ahmed bin Heli, the league's assistant secretary-general.

Egypt's Foreign Minister, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, urged Israel to acknowledge the international community's will by immediately ending attacks and pulling out of Lebanon.

"Israel now should be committed and show total commitment by [announcing] an immediate cease-fire so that the elements of a political settlement - which were reached after a big effort and after a heavy price was paid by the families and civilians - can take place," he said.

He also demanded investigations into alleged "massacres" committed by Israeli forces during the war.

""There is a difference between fighting those who don't wear uniforms and hit and run and fighting an army.""

Until a few days ago it was Israel playing hit and run, and Hezb. stood its ground. Incursions, abandoning gains, terrs come back.

Olmert tried to do this without taking land and mobilizing few units. It was an utter military, political and moral failure.

Within the last few days Israel is doing what it should have done...invading to the Litani, cleaning out rockets and Hezb. men. And they got to the river quickly.

Why didn't they do it sooner? Israeli papers were demanding this logical step.

We will find out more about Olmert's weakness in the weeks to come.

"... biggest regret is that this useless "holy man" didn't catch a bullet."

I was thinking the same......BUT.....the lebanese who were displaced by this response to nasrallahs unwarranted antagonization of Israel will soon start to feel the full impact of what it brought forth by way of consequences.

I'm thinking that nasrallah will soon find himself in Israeli hands, via some Lebanese patriots.

I hope the clause about Israel being able to continue defensive actions, does not get interpreted Hezbullah can unilaterally break the cease fire and Israel can only play defense.

"According to muslim mentality, the germans won WW2 because it took till 1945 for the allies to reach Berlin. "

Of course - and even more: most of Germans survived, allies suffered losses.

let's hope so - because otherwise, he's going to be elected prime minister of Lebanon. and then those Lebanese forces that make up the "peacekeepers" - will be under his control.

"If she did not accept a "cease fire" agreement that appeared reasonable, she would be labelled "unreasonable.""

Her entire problem is that she cares at all that a label, any label, will be applied to her. As such Israel cannot be said, at this point, to believe in Herself.

Arab commentators and journalists were almost unanimous in saying that Hizbullah had won the war.

There is no question that Israel has played its hand very poorly. In a part of the world where perception is often more important than reality, even the Israeli people have the taste of defeat. That is not good. Olmert should step down as quietly as possible and as soon as possible. The problem is, he thinks his way is right. To paraphrase Texas Jack Garner, "Diplomacy isn't worth a bucket of warm spit." Doubly true in the Middle East.

"But I think behind the lines Hezb. took big hits to offices, assets, factories. Nasrallah isn't peeping about the "prisoners" in Israel any more, his war aim"

I think Israel has done a horrible job of handling the media and PR war of this battle. There should of been more cameras going in with the troops into southern Lebannon to document and provide to the media how much Hezbollah was getting its butts kicked.

All the coverage I've seen of this battle has been of Hezbollah rocket attacks and the damage done to Beirut by the israeli air campaign.

While I'm sure the Israeli army has inflicted heavy damage on Hezbollah in southern Lebannon, their currently is very little proof of this. Once and awhile, you would see video of israelis showing some guns laying on the ground or abandoned buildings that had computers and nightvision equipment, but I yet to see a single picture or video of Hezbollah getting their butts kicked.

This Israel taking the high road mentality with this conflict has given the muslims every oppurtunity to claim victory. While I don't give a crap about the arab media and their insane claims that go against all facts, I haven't been impressed with how the Israeli army handled this battle. They took way too much time pussyfooting around the border in the begining of this battle and trying to be politically correct, instead of giving Hezbollah a boot up the ass for all the world to see.

"behind the lines Hezb. took big hits to offices, assets, factories. Nasrallah isn't peeping about the "prisoners" in Israel any more, his war aim"

No doubt, this is ultimately predictable Hizbullah spin. They took much heavier losses financially, in man power, and certainly in weaponry than did Israel. They also did not acheive their stated aims of a prisoner exchange, or their more general claim to defend Lebanon's southern border. Not only that but they have now lost their territorial advantage (limiting their future value to Syria and Iran) and an embarrasing amount of very expensive Iranian and Syrian weaponry (the fact that Iran is arming them with missiles is now an internationally known and accepted fact rather than an intelligence claim).
Hizbullah did not win, but it also did not lose as badly as it could have. The sweeping out of missiles and weapons in southern Lebanon that will now take place after the ceasefire during Israel's retreat is the right thing to do, but a large-scale ground-force to neutralize the missile threat should have been sent in first thing. Had that been done, special forces raids could have been sent in farther north to take out Hizbullah's long-range missiles as well as take out Hizbullah's top leadership. Wouldn't it be alot harder for Nasrallah to claim victory from a body-bag?

They won because they can claim they kept Israel out of Lebanon for four weeks.

That was Olmert's doing, but they'll claim it the same.

Nonsense. You and I here have no idea as to the actual effectiveness of the Israelis during this current operation. The enemy does have support in the Mainstream media and so their losses will not be revealed for a long time if ever. Tet is a very good example. This is getting closer and closer to brass tacks now. We kill them, they kill us let's just do all we can to support the continued and unabated killing of them in ever increasing numbers with ever widening scope.

This is a war to the death with the Islamofacists. We win or get our 8 year old daughters ready to be their two hour "Brides".

We must defeat our Stockholm Syndrome liberals at home. A likely Payola driven Mains Stream Media and the Enemy...

So what's new?
