Color me ignorant. What do cell phones have in them as components, which when combined together, assist in creating an explosive?

Electricity. I believe they act as the detonator for the explosive itself.

Call your buddy's phone and BLAMMO!

Not to create an explosive, but to trigger one.

they are used as detonators for remote-controlled bombs... set the timer (alarm or stop watch feature) on the cellphone or simply dial the cell phone connected to the bomb and boom the bomb goes off.

A timer and a battery, as well as a means of remote detonation (phone call). A cell phone is a very cheap detonator.

They use the cell phone usually in vibrate mode to initiate the explosion.

The Chechens were really the first to to this.

Two per explosion I believe. One to have the explosive attached to it and another to detonate it.

another freeper made this observation on another thread:

<< The model to worry about with this is the mass bombing in Bangladesh a year or so ago when about 500 small bombs went off in a very short time widely spread over the country. A few bombers to spread lots of bombs and then let their master phones call the rest. They are limited only by how many bombs they can hide before the battery runs down on the first hidden bomb's phone trigger. >>

Not so much explosive components but detonation devices.

While it's not especially good to go into details, anything that picks up a signal and triggers a response is potentially a detonator. Cell phones use satellites to convey signals so they are particularly desired for their range. This is known stuff for people who pursue it and won't get anyone further than they already are, so I can feel free in sharing it.

Don't feel ignorant. The fact that you don't pursue it is pretty darn comforting. : )

electricity for a spark (detonator) and they are not traceable as to ownership

They are not used as the explosive. They are used for the communications among terrorists. Once intelligence agents can track a call and location, the phone is discarded and the location is lost.

This is why a couple of months ago there was a big deal made by the Leftists who criticized the Bush administration and the intelligence offices tracking phone numbers and the calls made between phone numbers. Intelligence wasn't listening to the conversations but were using algorithms to track which phones were connecting to which, in an effort to determine where terrorists may be, as this appears to be their communication method.

Think how hard it would be to locate a terrorists or to pick up the details of a plan if every conversation were on a different phone at a different location.

Cell phones are far more sophisticated than most people can imagine.

In a simple scenario, an incoming call causes the phone to ring. However, the ringer wires were connected by the terrorist to the detonator of a bomb.
