IDF offensive continues despite UN vote

The IDF's offensive against Hizbullah in south Lebanon continued unabated early Saturday, after the United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution calling for an immediate end to the fighting.

On Friday, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Defense Minister Amir Peretz ordered the IDF to send additional ground forces into Lebanon and advance toward the Litani river, some 30 kilometers from Israel.

Israeli officials expressed satisfaction with the UN Security Council's resolution, and the government was scheduled to vote on the cease-fire at its weekly cabinet meeting Sunday morning.

The government implemented Wednesday's Cabinet decision that authorized the army to carry out a massive ground offensive "to deal with the Hizbullah positions in south Lebanon, from which barrages of missiles continue to be launched against the Israeli civilian population," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Mark Regev.

"Our action does not exclude a diplomatic option," Regev said. "On the contrary, we are following developments in New York closely. But so far diplomacy has not produced concrete results and it is incumbent upon the government to defend its citizens."

The IDF had over the passed few days been gearing up for the operation which was approved by the Security Cabinet on Wednesday. According to military sources, close to 70 percent of the Katyusha rockets raining down on Israel are fired from just south of, and north of the Litani river. It is in these parts of Lebanon that the Hizbullah's Nasser Unit is waiting with thousands of fighters and functioning command and control centers.

IDF sources said that even with a cease-fire in place, Israel should try to improve its position militarily - to push to the Litani to drive back Hizbullah and push its rocket launching capabilities from away from the northern border.

At least 7000 soldiers are currently operating in Lebanon.

The IDF said that it would take at least one week to get to the Litani river and another 4-6 weeks to clear out the Hizbullah presence and rocket launchers from the area.

Don't forget that the IDF will pull out and let Hezbollah back in to set up and rocket Israel again.

How is this resolution going to remove/disarm hezbollah and keep them that way? Why is Israel/USA signing off on this without that, I don't get it.

Does this mean that the ceasefire is only in the paper?

I sat next to a lawyer on a redeye back from the West Coast last week. It start out civil enough. We exchanged pleasantries and got to talking. Before long, the topic turned to the Israeli-Hezbollah war. He let me know that he thought this whole situation with Hezbollah was being blown out of proportion by Israel and that they were at fault by "going to extremes". He also thought that we needed to engage the Islamists and find out if there was a middle ground that we could compromise with them.

After about an hour of trying to reason with this guy, I got so mad that I told him that I'd be happy to discuss it with him outside after we landed. He called the stewardess and ended up switching seats. I have never done that before, but he just pushed all my buttons. This guy was a liberal lawyer who thought he could talk his way out of anything. I just thought I'd give him a demonstration to the contrary.

PS -- I didn't see his face in baggage claim. Good thing.

Condi should have been fired for incompetance (along w Tenet) on 9/12/2001. She is qualified to be NFL Commissioner, but her Arabist machinations are despicable.

good fer you!!! It's about time that the liberals aren't the only ones outspoken about what they think (feel). If you start talking with them, they get lost. They're not used to having to defend themselves and it shows up that they don't really know what they're talking about -- they just know the party line.

Hizbollah thanks you for your support.
Seriously, you should be disgusted with Iran, Hizbollah, and he MSM for being PR fronts for Hizbollah. Hizbollah is 100% responsible for all the deaths in this war.

Yep, that is why I pray the Cabinet fires Ehud and tells the military Sat.-Sun to keep going to the Bakka Valley and do as much damage as it can. Any UN resolution is fatuous and that Condi and Bolton had to be a part of it, must have rankled them. Of course, W should be praying that Israel disregards this number 1559 clone and keeps drilling the Hezbos with as much fire power as necessary.
Odd that W finally, finally used the word Islamofascism as our enemy, blames Hezbos, and then goes along with this malarky. Condi, John, and George must be having a strong drink tonight to overcome their nausea.
