Thanks Bo. I was sure that for the most part the SS were volunteers, even in foreign nations. However, it does make sense that some of them were forced rather than actually having volunteered, considering the nature of their conquerors.

I am reasonably familiar with this as I know a gentleman who was in the Latvian Waffen SS. He was definitely not a volunteer but assuaged his feelings with the knowledge that he was now able to fight the Russians. Very interesting talking to this fellow.
