Wonder if TWA 800 was a test run of the "explosive liquid" approach to blowing up an airliner.
According to eyewitness testimony of 20 or so people, there was a streak in the sky (I remember seeing actual photos on TV) heading in the direction of the plane and then a huge explosion. I believe it was taken out by a SAM. Even Kerry referred to that flight as an act of terrorism when speaking to Larry king one night. The comments were posted here.
