Day of terror strikes was planned for August 16
Daily Mail ^ | 8/11/2006

Terrorists were planning to unleash a series of deadly mid-air explosions on flights between London and America on August 16, it has been revealed today.

Members of the terror group, who were arrested in a series of raids by anti-terror police yesterday, were due to mount a dry run today to check if they could smuggle components for liquid explosives through Britain's airports.

United Airline tickets dated next Wednesday were found by police at the home of one of the raided addresses.

One US intelligence official told today's Evening Standard: "The bombers were a couple of days from a test, and a few days from doing it."

The airlines targeted were United, American and Continental, which fly to New York, Washington and California.

Today the Bank of England named and froze the assets of 19 of the 24 air terror suspects arrested. The bank was acting under the instruction of Chancellor Gordon Brown and on the advice of the police and security services.

It acted under powers granted by the United Nations to tackle the financing of terrorism in the wake of the September 11 2001 attacks. Its action means it is a crime to make their money available without a licence from the Treasury.

The oldest of the named suspects is 35 and the youngest 17. Thirteen of them are from east London - nine from Walthamstow, one from Chingford, one from Leyton, one from the Limehouse and Poplar area and one from Clapton.

Four are from High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, and the other two are from Birmingham and Stoke Newington, north London.

The imam of Walthamstow mosque, where many of the suspects live, urged the Muslim community to remain calm and assist the police in their inquries. The unnamed imam added: "We'd like to remind people that the suspects are innocent until proven guilty."

Meanwhile, a senior Pakistani government official said today that two British nationals arrested in Pakistan provided information about the alleged UK air terror plot.

The UK remains on a "critical" level of alert against terrorism and air passengers at UK airports are expected to face widespread disruption again today following the introduction of new anti-terrorism measures yesterday including a ban on hand luggage.

The plot, which was described as an attempt to commit "mass murder on an unimaginable scale" by blowing up passenger jet, may have been thwarted just days before it was due to be carried out.

Glenn Beck just reported that August 22 was one of the dates. I missed his source.

Good question. Perhaps nothing significant. Possible they've adjusted their tactics since the West has become quite keen to their days of religious/cultural significance.

NYT deeply saddened this plot came to light... without their exclusive scoop.

I watched the Glen Beck show last night and it was fascinating. Even Beck said he thought he was sounding like a nut case but the date Aug 22 was looking more and more like a date to start something big. He surmised that the airplane plot was to cause distraction while Iran was plotting something big.

Aug 22 was written about in the Wall Street Journal by Bernard Lewis who Glen Beck kept referring. The article is linked to below.

LOL, did you see the thread by Doug??? He called the NYT's international desk and told them he was doing an article for FR and wanted to know if they were upset by not being able to run the story ahead of time so they could warn the terrorists.

re: It acted under powers granted by the United Nations to tackle the financing of terrorism

Huh? I beg your pardon, I must have misunderstood you, it sounded like you said the UN has some sort of authority to grant powers to sovereign nations, which suggests they might also have the authority to deny those same powers. This is simply too much.

Technically, the NYT has no comment.

If you missed this thread, you missed the brilliance of a fellow FReeper.

Well, one can very have too many Ritz Crackers, tang and peanut butter in the house.

Oh and water.

The funny thing is we have a well dug for outside watering. We recently bought a hand pump for spot watering without using the electric pump. I think I need to do some research on how to make this drinkable water.

I thought this whole incident was being portrayed as a big win by the western intelligence communities.

That statement above makes it sound a bit more like an accidental discovery. That would be a whole lot scarier -- I wonder which is the case?

Eh, let it be both. That's the way it happens a lot of the time. We're getting more hooks into the terrorist organizations which gives us more info; that's a cycle that gets better and better.

Nahhhh, The NYT would have sat on it until 8/12, then done an exclusive of the interviews of the late hijackers with a detailed inside story of the whole plot. Casual photos of the hijackers, their families, and the going away party would be sprinkled throughout the full special section article...

Betting on Aug 22 is logical. Oh the other hand, that is the mad man of Iran's date and if this is Al Quada (sp),then this would be a OBL method of making himself relevant whereas he has been overshadowed of late.
