Russia continues to be the prototypical thorn in our side by the design of the former KGB boy running the show over there. After Beslan, you would think that Pukin' would understand the nature of what he will face if he gives Iran time to arm. Does he seriously believe that having an Islamonazi state with nukes on his border is no threat to him? As soon as the Iranians grow tired of him or don't need him they will erase Moscow. They don't care about the response as evidenced by Ahma-nutjobs comments about Israel's retaliatory strike only killing 15 million or so.

What are the implications for us and our tanks? Is Iran testing out weapons they plan to use against us in Iraq?

The Merkava has significantly inferior armor compared to the Abrams -- the armor technology in our MBTs is more advanced. To put some perspective on it, the Abrams tanks have been hit multiple times in friendly fire incidents, including by other Abrams tanks, and the armor has been surprisingly resistant even to current US anti-armor weapon systems.

So you could say that the Abrams armor has been battle-proven survivable against current US anti-armor systems. The US is field testing some new battlefield anti-armor technologies that will be able to decisively destroy an Abrams, so that state will be short-lived.

If you have ever watched a fully loaded B-52 take off from Andersen AFB Guam you would not have to ask that question. Once it clears the end of the runway there is a clift and the plane will drop out of sight if you are watching from the runway. After a few minutes it will reappear, climbing slowly way off in the distance. Almost heart-stopping to watch.

Yes, a B-52 would have to circle to gain altitude or go out over the sea, then make the bombing run.

It can't possibly be good.

The IDF keeps being surprised.

I raised the immature ire of Israelphiles on FR a few months ago whenever I suggested that they were living in 1972 and that odds are this isn't your father's Israel anymore. I think one of their problems is that they bought the Israel reputation from over 30 years ago and figured nothing changed in 30+ years.

Seems that quite a few folks in Israel were in a 30-year time warp, too.

This is a rare case where I wish I wasn't right.

The M1A2 uses the original British Chobham armour which is very good, but the Challenger 2 uses 2nd generation chobham which is even better.

The Abrams uses a modified Chobham derivative that is significantly more resistant than the original Chobham armor. It would be more accurate to say the Abrams uses a "Chobham type" armor technology. US materials science is second to none, and most of the military technology we adopt from others is re-engineered using our more advanced materials science capability. It is one of the key technology advantages of the US military.

It's a heck of lot easier to kill a tank WHEN YOU HAVE THE DAMN THINGS PARKED IN DEFFERENCE TO THE FREAKIN' U.N.!

For the love of God either let the IDF MOVE, and keep the Hezbullies on defense, or just get them the hell out of there and accept defeat. (Either sh|+ or get off the commode.) They're gonna take as many casualties sitting there as they would advancing and taking death to the enemy! This is insane.

Or screened by infantry....

"That's not correct. The Katyusha rocket was first used by the Soviets in WWII as an answer to German artillery. However, since that time over 20 countries have produced the rockets and even more keep them in their inventory. The US has a version. The Katyusha rockets being used against Isreal are Syrian, and the longer range Fajr-3 and Fajr-5 are Iranian. None of these are Russian."

I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the Russian's involvement here. It's well known that Hafez al Assad was a Soviet puppet, and God knows what all the Soviets provided to the Syrians. And sure, the "Katyusha" was an easily copied design; heck, some of these Arab militants have been making their own crude copies. The design stll origninated in Russia.

Or do you disagree about the Arab diminutive comment...

I think you are mistaken...the Magach is designed off of the M-60 chasis, the Merkava was a all new design.

I'm betting they don't have DU armor like the M1.

Hamas is paying attention. Now they want Katyushas and anti tank missiles. The Hizb'Allah used the anti tank missiles on a lot more than tanks. They used them as enhanced RPGs
