In Jewish law, it is permitted to fight on the Sabbath to save human lives. That goes back to the Maccabean times when pious Jews would rest on the Sabbath, only to discover their enemies would take advantage of it to slaughter them. So Judaism liberalized the Sabbath rule - that in the event of grave danger it is not only allowed - it is commanded by Heaven to do whatever is necessary to save lives. And reverence for life is Judaism's highest value.
