maybe off topic but..........

U.S. Embassy in New Delhi Warns of Possible Al Qaeda Terror Attacks in India Friday, August 11, 2006

NEW DELHI — The U.S. Embassy in India's capital warned Friday that foreign militants, possibly Al Qaeda members, may be planning to carry out bombings in two major Indian cities in the coming days.

In an e-mail sent to American citizens living in India, the Embassy said New Delhi, the capital, and Bombay, the country's financial and entertainment hub, were the targets of the alleged plot, and that the attacks were believed to be planned around India's Independence Day, which falls on Aug. 15.

The Embassy confirmed that it had sent the e-mail, although Indian officials refused to comment on the warning.

Word of the alleged plot came a day after British police said they had thwarted another terrorist plot, possibly just days away, to blow up U.S.-bound jetliners over the Atlantic and kill thousands.

Investigators described a plan on the scale of the Sept. 11 attacks that would use common electronic devices to detonate liquid explosives concealed in sports drink bottles to bring down as many as 10 planes in a nearly simultaneous strike.

The U.S. Embassy's warning for India said the "likely targets include major airports, key central Indian government offices, and major gathering places such as hotels and markets."

It urged American citizens to maintain a low profile, and be especially alert and attentive to their surroundings" between Aug. 11 and Aug. 16.

Well, I timed this just perfectly - or you did! Good lunchtime, Allegra!

Look what happened the first time I missed my meeting of the night owls. All hell *almost* broke loose overnight.

When I tried to catch up, there were almost 100 different threads on the thwarted bomb plot! Egad. I made an archive, but I still don't think I know the whole story.

Have a good day - and morning to the rest of "youse guys." I'm having to take an extra antihistamine at night and that means I sleep, so may not last.

I have no earthly idea what's happening with Israel and the Hezzies - I just hope our side is winning!

Syria not aiding Hezbollah, says ambassador

www.chinaview.cn 2006-08-11 05:08:24

Special report: Israel-Lebanon conflicts

MOSCOW, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- Syria's ambassador to Russia rejected on Thursday claims that Damascus is aiding Hezbollah by supplying it with weapons.

"Syria is among the main players in the region, but not through any pressure on the organization," Hassan Rishah said, quoted by the Itar-Tass news agency.

"Damascus will not say 'stop' to this movement. Syria does not incite anybody and observes all international obligations. Hezbollah is a Lebanese organization that subordinates to nobody from outside," Rishah said.

The United States has repeatedly accused Syria and Iran of supporting Hezbollah, which has waged a fierce battle with Israel since July 12.

Over 900 Lebanese have been killed and 3,000 others wounded in the massive Israeli offensive that started on July 12 following the abduction of two Israeli soldiers by Hezbollah guerrillas. More than 70 Israelis have been killed in the 24 days of fighting. Enditem

Is that the same 900 body count for Lebanon that it was before it was *really* 600? They keep changing it way up and then way down.

Get well jeffers. I have been following the posts even though I haven't been pitching in much.

But just so that I can put in my two cents worth, basically right now I am convinced that Israel is continuing to secure the eastern flank of the battlefield in Lebanon south of the Litani River to make certain that Hezbollah cannot receive direct aid from Syria via the Bekaa Valley. But if the "points of engagement" at the northern end of that eastern sector continue to multiply, as they have been doing for the past couple of days, then I will look for Israel to attempt some kind of encircling move, and maybe not necessarily with the intention of cutting off all of Hezbollah's line of retreat. I still cannot get my finger on the pulse of Israel's ultimate strategic goal; do they desire the disarmament or destruction of Hezbollah as a feasibly-achievable goal in the campaign? If they only move to encircle a portion of Hezbollah's positions, that would suggest disarmament, because Hezbollah would seek a retreat across the "undefended line" and away from Syria and towards the rest of that portion of Lebanon unfriendly to Syria. But if Israel should attempt to cut off the entirety of the Litani behind the advanced Hezbollah units, then we will witness a true bloodletting as Israel will methodically liquidate Hezbollah while the world community rushes to come up with new alternatives they are not willing to consider right now.

Forgive my prejudice everyone, but I hope for complete encirclement and the absolute liquidation of Hezbollah. There is only one piece of evidence I see, beyond Israel's securing of the eastern flank of the area south of the Litani River, which suggests this is their preferred course of action and that is the "no drive zone" declaration. That is just the sort of thing I would expect to see if Israel planned the complete destruction of Hezbollah. But we'll just have to wait and see.

Get some chicken soup jeffers.
