Plane plot involved 'explosive cocktail,' official says

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Terrorists were in the "final stages" of a plot to simultaneously blow up as many as 10 jets leaving Britain for the U.S., sending the planes and thousands of passengers into the Atlantic Ocean, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said Thursday.

British and Pakistani authorities teamed up to thwart the attacks, and 24 men were arrested in overnight raids in Britain, authorities said.

An undercover British agent infiltrated the group, giving the authorities intelligence on the alleged plan, several U.S. government officials said.

The men had not bought plane tickets, the officials said, but they were in the process of perusing the Internet to find flights to various cities that had similar departure times.

Two of the suspects recently traveled to Pakistan and later received money wired from there, senior U.S. government sources said.

Among those arrested were a Muslim charity worker and a Heathrow Airport employee with an all-area access pass, according to Britain's Channel 4.

The suspects were planning to stage a test run within a couple of days, said a U.S. intelligence official.

It's not that easy to obtain peroxide in high concentration, though it is possible for industrial usage. The stuff you buy in the drugstore is 97% water, and even the kind used for hair coloring is at most 12% active (88% water).

But I bet peroxide will now go on the list of substances for industries to track.

And according to our local ABC channel, Mr. Tariq had a pass that allowed him access to the entire airport.

They used a peroxide two part solution

Simple to make and use. Especially simple if no ignition source is needed.

Go to a swimming pool supply company. I am not certain, but if memory is correct they have some peroxide solutions that are in the neighborhood of 90%. Use only a couple of gallons in a 20,000 gallon pool.

Oooh..

Don't say peroxide.

I had a bad experience at work about seven years ago with peroxide (10%) and H2SO4.

To this day, I'm the only one who knows about it.

Shhhh........

Well I wasn't going to mention the acids but since you brought it up:) Sulfuric acid is one you can use and a strong concentration of hydrogen peroxide. This is what they were going to be using in some kind of slurry solution in a false bottom of sports drink bottles. The slurry would be died to match the color of the drinks.

The highest I have seen is 70%. I think though that what would be used would be organic peroxides which are very unstable - which could be used as an initiator. They can be set off by shock or heat. And yes, they are easy to get if you are in the chemical industry.

"they'll publish it along with where to get the ingredients"

And why shouldn't they? Though, I'm sure they won't...

The terrorists already know how to make the stuff...and out of curiosity, I'd like to know how to make it. One never knows when you'll have to blow a stump out of the ground.

They were supposedly going to use the flash batteries from a disposable camera to ignite the mixture. I suspect they were going to use a cheap timer. This was not a suicide mission I don't think.

Liquid explosives are nothing new to terrorists. A suicide bomber used some in the 1980's to bring down an airliner.

Why do I keep thinking of my grandpa's dentures?

* * * *

Be smart. Motive, Means, Opportunity. The old murder standards. Current screening only removes a large chunk of the means, and the awareness of the public and post-Flight 93 readiness to repell a hijacking on the spot removes 99.9% (or more) of the opportunity. The shoe bomber Reid case shoes how that works -- he had the means, even past screening, yet was DENIED the opportunity.

And in the greater field, the invasion of Afganistan and Iraq, and now Lebannon (by our brother Israel) also have removed whole hives of "means" -- of mean, vile men set to terror and murder.

But we do nothing -- zero, zilch, nada -- at the gates regarding MOTIVE.

And what is the "motive"? Why it is the evil teachings of the particular Muslim sub-sects and significant groups of clerics. Me -- I say those "clerics" who continue to teach jihad as death to infidels, and who teach in any way that to die as a suicide bomber is a gloried matrydom -- those clerics are war criminals of the most genocidal murderous type. No more, no more, no more -- not one day longer should we allow them to teach or speak to any ptotential student or reach out to any by writing, recording, internet, media -- any thing or any re-teller. They are the Hitlers and Mussolinis of our era -- worse -- by their words and teachings they commit acts unbearable by humanity. By delivering and encouraging those teachings and hatred to the young and to the gullible mobs, to the poor -- the mullahs, the imans, the ayatollahs commit murder.

It is they who provide the motive. We must focus on removing the motive -- it is the only area to which we have given no attention. And that is the window through which the missiles fly, the break in the circle of defenders through which good dads become mourners for their good sons, and mothers, grandmothers, daughters and children are viciously slaughtered.

Go against the driving forces -- the motive. The teachings and the teachers.

Yes, apparently it was a very strong solution of peroxide and the other part was sulfuric acid, to be set off with batteries from the flash of a disposable camera.
