The Israelis warned residents of southern Beirut to evacuate their homes today, even as an expanded Israeli military operation remained on hold as diplomats negotiated over a United Nations resolution to halt the fighting. But on the right, Benjamin Netanyahu, the leader of the Likud Party, warned the government that it must accomplish its goal, which is to disarm Hezbollah. We must not leave them intact, ready to attack again, he said in Jerusalem. I support the governments goals. I adhere to them, and I hope the government does, too.
Mr. Netanyahu said he would save any criticism for after the war, but he urged Mr. Olmert to cut off the tentacle of Hezbollah now, and he castigated those who do not see Irans hand in controlling both Hezbollah and Hamas.
