GOP, Democrats Clash Over War On Terror

WASHINGTON - Republicans and Democrats clashed over the war on terror on Thursday within hours of the disclosure of a thwarted terrorist plot in Britain, each side accusing the other of doing too little to deter the threat of attack.

"We must implement the strong recommendations of the independent 9/11 commission to improve airport security screening at checkpoints," said House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, stressing one of the party's principal campaign-year promises in its drive to gain control of Congress.

Ohio Republicans said the Democratic candidate for the Senate, Rep. Sherrod Brown (news, bio, voting record), had voted against money "for the very types of programs that helped the British thwart these vicious attacks."

"I don't question his patriotism, but the fact is if Sherrod Brown had his way, America would be less safe," said Bob Bennett, chairman of the Ohio Republican Party.

Brown, who is challenging Republican Sen. Mike DeWine (news, bio, voting record), mentioned the billions on the Iraq war and said the thwarted attacks "underscore the need to refocus our resources on fighting the war on terror."

The charges served as a reminder that with midterm elections less than three months away, not even an alleged attack to blow up passenger planes was off-limits to politics.

Both Republicans and Democrats are seeking political advantage on national security. Voters will choose a new Congress Nov. 7, and polls show the public favoring Democratic control of Congress over Republicans who have been in power for a dozen years.

Additionally, recent polls have found that the Republican edge on terrorism and protecting the country has eroded over the past few months.

The 9-11 Commission will save us all! I love how this is the Democrats' answer to everything, the 9-11 Commission. Not operating a robust war on terror, not finishing the job in Iraq, not wiretapping Al Qaeda suspects, no, just implementing new bureacracy as recommended by a bunch of liberal hacks on the 9-11 Commission, including the brilliant Jamie Goerlick who helped to gouge out the eyes of our intelligence agencies in the 90s.

And by the way, how would the 9-11 Commission's findings have had any impact on a plot being carried out from the UK exactly? This didn't originate here and not a syllable of the 9-11 Commission findings would have changed a damn thing in terms of this. Funny how without it, the Brits still managed to uncover it.

The libs are trying to legitimize the ruse that we call the "9/11 Commission". A sham upon this country, really designed to hide the malfeasance, incompetence and carelessness of our government, which could have prevented 9/11 and 3000 deaths. The political class protecting the political class -- we should thanks Curt Weldon for exposing much of the TRUTH about the 9/11 commission, through various channels including the revelations of ABLE DANGER, and the blatant protection of Gorelick, the architect of the muzzling of our 3-letter agencies, by putting her on the 9/11 commission, so she could not be called to testify under oath. A complete stooge of the Clinton malfeasance, she skated. So the libs, with this reality, are trying to legitimize the 9/11 commission by citing it over and over.

Lee Hamilton said that the government should immediately order 10,000,000 doses of Acute Radiation Syndrome medicine so what does Health and Human Services do....? They order 100,000 doeses to treat potential victims of nuclear fallout. They made lot of recommendations but the Bush government hasn't done the job of looking out for us. Border security is another issue they fail on. I voted for Bush twice but don't understand his open border policies. They just don't work. We could have Al Quaida slipping through the lax borders and noone seems to give a darn!

5 years with no attacks on US soil speaks for itself. And the only time there has ever been an attempted attack on the US came across the Canadian border, the Millenium plot, not the Southern one. Every other attack or attempt involved legal entry into the US. To say they've not done a good job of looking out for us is nonsense. Little has been spared in that effort including a ROBUST WAR ON TERROR ABROAD.
