I actually visited Alaska in August, 2002 (Land tour) and I went from Anchorage to Fairbanks, above Polar Cirlce (Gateway to Arctic National Park). I've seen Trans-Alaska Pipeline a number of times--really impressive engineering feat to build Pipeline largely overland in Permafrost.
However, Pipelines require good maintenance. Plus, considering how crucial Energy Security for National Security, this incident certainly requires a thorough inquiry.

The TransAlaska Pipeline Systems (TAPS) is very well maintained and is 'pigged' regularly. It also heavily regulated and has multiple FedGov and SoA watchdogs - it is the most heavily regulated pipeline in the USofA.
The pipelines in question are feeders from wells to separators to Pump Station #1. They are not regulated nor covered by the SoA watchdogs - both are likely to change...
