I don't like this one bit either - Israel puts ground offensive on hold

Olmert definitely did screw up. Even I could see that on the first day of the war with Hezbollah, and I've never been in the military.

He should have bombed for a couple of days, and then immediately sent in the troops. He waited too long.

From the beginning Israel has been fighting this war "half way". They have not shown the strong united national will that is necessary. They act like they can't decide whether they want to fight or not. The strategy of making incursions into Lebanon and then pulling back has worked as well as the US strategy in Vietnam, when we would fight pitched battles for villages only to pull out and give the ground back to the vietcong. The result of their indecisiveness has been more casualties.

If they want to get rid of Olmert, all they have to do is convince the Cabinet to levy a vote of no confidence.

This plan was supposed to have begun with a surprise air onslaught against the Hezbollah high command in Beirut, before they would have had time to relocate to their underground bunkers. This was to have been followed immediately by large scale airborne and seaborne landing operations, in order to get several divisions on the Litani River line, enabling them to outflank Hezbollah's "Maginot line" in southern Lebanon. This would have surprised Hezbollah, which would have had to come out of its fortifications and confront the IDF in the open, in order to avoid being isolated, hunted down and eventually starved into a humiliating submission.

I love this plan.

Olmert is a liberal. That has always been the problem with Israels left. They think that land for peace is the answer and pray that the US will come to their aid if something happens.

They want it to be our responsibility to save their asses. They better learn that the reason their military is the best in the world is exactly for the reason on what is happening now.

Use the military,m get rid of the threat and then worry about politics.

Politicians and Generals do not usually make good bed fellows.. unfortunately, when it comes to Israel, that is not an allowance they can afford. Radicals only understand one thing.. DEFEAT! Israel is in a fight for its life and must do whatever is needed to secure victory.

They need to do what has to be done. Stop a nuclear Iran from nuking Israel into oblivion NEXT YEAR. There is no time left KGC warfighting.

It is almost time for Bibi to become the Churchill of Israel.

Seems like the nation has been united, but not the war council.

Bibi has attention deficit disorder, foot in mouth disease and hydrophobia. A leader he isn't.

What would the opposition do differently? Olmert is kicking Hellzbolla butt and creating a safe zone on the Lebanese border?

Is he really as bad as Carter? I though he was doing a good job of going after the Hellzbola terrorist?

Yoni the Blogger (former Israeli intelligence officer), seems to agree with this assessment. If it's OK to post his blog-link:

http://www.yonitheblogger.com/

Apologies to Mods if that's out of bounds, and obviously, remove addy if that's the case.

Yoni has been raising hell about the tentative Olmert "war" effor for some time now. He says this thing could have been finished by way of a resounding Israeli victory by now.

you may be reading too much into it. A public school education today for someone with no interest in history or military history might still imprint the word 'blitzkrieg' in the brain of the student, who couldn't tell you what a hoplite was, and who thinks Hannibal is a character in a book and movie.

Yeah Olmert seems to be very weak on defense.

Olmert has the same disease that his last few predicessors had. They stupidly seek U.S. approval before they carry out foreign policy.

In 2000, their leadership nearly gave away the farm in my opion, driven relentlessly by Billy Clinton's desparate persuit of the Nobel Peace Prize.

No nation should deflect decisions concerning their own survival to another nation, no matter how friendly their relations are. Suicide is NOT an option, even for a friend.

Whether Israel knows it or not, they need Bibi. And Bibi should make sure he's innoculated from the above disease before he takes over. He's showed some warning signs the last time he held office, once again IMO.
