Arrested 24 over airline bombing plot

Tens of thousands of travellers in Britain have been stranded or left to wait in crowded airports as heightened security sparked by an alleged plot to blow up US bound planes from the UK has wreaked havoc in the international air traffic network.

British Home Secretary John Reid says police are confident that the main suspects in the plot "have been accounted for" but has explained that the country's security alert had been raised to its highest level, "critical", as a precautionary measure.

British anti-terrorist police say the plot involved explosives concealed in hand luggage.

Many airlines have cancelled flights to Britain and the centre of the alleged threat, London Heathrow, Europe's busiest airport.

Pakistan has made a number of arrests, which helped uncover the plot to blow up planes flying between Britain and the United States, Pakistan's foreign office has reported.

The number of people that have been arrested in Britain in connection with the suspected plot to blow up several aircraft is now 24, police have reported.

"Now all those arrested in the overnight anti-terrorist operation have been processed into custody, the total number in custody is 24," London police said in a statement.

"There were no new arrests during the day."

Police had earlier said they were holding 21 people in custody after overnight raids.

A senior Pakistani security official confirmed that Pakistani intelligence agencies have helped British authorities to foil the scheme.

"Pakistan played a very important role in uncovering and breaking this international terrorist network," foreign office spokeswoman Tasnim Aslam said.

"There were some arrests in Pakistan which were coordinated with arrests in the UK."

Travel chaos

Some airlines have now resumed services after the British Airports Authority (BAA) and air traffic control authorities lifted earlier restrictions on short-haul flights to and from Heathrow.

BAA say 611 flights, roughly half of the daily total at Heathrow, had been cancelled as of 1500 GMT.

They include 302 incoming flights and 309 departures.

The inter-connected nature of international air travel means the disruption caused by the chaos at Heathrow has rippled out across the world.

In the United States, American Airlines have cancelled six flights to and from Heathrow and US carriers say they are allowing passengers bound for Britain to change their travel plans for free.

An American Airlines spokeswoman has insisted that the cancellations have nothing to do with any specific intelligence that the carrier might have received with regard to the alleged plot.

Hopefully, this will send enough of a chill down the American peoples' spines that most of them will remember exactly why we're doing what we're doing in the WoT. This fight is far from over, but at least it's good to know that we have an extremely effective defense.

I know why the terrorists do this stuff, but ponder the utter stupidity and insanity.

You kill yourself and a lot of travelers, probably including quite a few devout Moslems. And IF they succeeded the result would probably be more decisive military action against Iran, Syria, Al Queda, and the Pakistan outlaw region.

BTW, we should be taking that military action because they tried, even though they failed. Where is the drumbeat for action against Iran? That is what most people are waiting for.

Go and troll your favorite liberal web site. To the raving moonbats, this is all either completely untrue and made up to embarrass Lamontayollah and the Dems, 9/11 and this are all Bush/Cheney's fault or if only the Dems had been or were in power, nothing bad would ever happen again.
Some of them are so far gone that they actually appear to have a psychosis. No matter the facts, their opinions simply don't change.

I doubt it. Schumer is stuck in Heathrow and bitching about the delays.

If the Egyptian Eleven make it to LA will Special Order 40 be rescinded to allow LAPD to make an arrest?

I think so too, but it did 'sound' a bit like he was specifically telling him to go back to DU, or something...

But you're forgetting the 72 virgins.
Therein lies the rub. You have a "religion" that calls evil good, and good evil. Instead of condemning these types of actions, it actually offers eternal bliss for those that commit them. You'll hear belated claims that 'this is not islam', or 'this is bad, but... (usually some justification follows)' -- BUT you'll never hear the 'Iman' du jour state that these homicidal maniacs have written their own one-way ticket to hell. That's because their 'good book' tells them otherwise. These 'terrorists' meet their definition of saints.
That's the core problem, and things won't get better until we acknowledge it.

It will for those of us already aware of the dangers. Nothing will persuade those who believe 9/11 was a WH plot. Even if the terrorists succeed, they will assume that it was again plotted by the WH. Facts do not go far in this world of ours. Already set biases and prejudices rule the day.

No. I'm for him or her, whomever the Shirer admirer may be. I've just been reading some the entries posted by the left in response to this news and much of it indicates a denial of simple facts.

Actually Gatwick and Stansted are open, although they have cancelled some flights as well. I think they're getting the Heathrow customers who are trying to get out.
