Lieberman compares terrorists to Nazis, calls for unity
AP ^ | August 10, 2006

U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman, in his first campaign appearance since launching his independent re-election campaign, likened terrorists to Nazis and called for Republicans and Democrats to work together to combat them.

"We are at war with a brutal enemy," said Lieberman during a campaign stop Thursday at a Waterbury pizza joint. "How the heck can we be in a battle in which we are fighting as Democrats and Republicans against each other when these terrorists certainly don't distinguish based on party affiliation? They want to kill any and all of us."

Lieberman lost by 10,000 votes in Connecticut's Democratic primary to millionaire businessman Ned Lamont, who ran on an anti-war platform. Although top state and national Democrats support Lamont in November's general election, Lieberman on Wednesday filed petitions to run as an independent candidate.

British authorities on Thursday arrested 21 people and said they thwarted a terrorist plot to simultaneously blow up several aircraft heading to the U.S. using explosives smuggled in hand luggage.

Word of the plot instantly raised security levels at airports across the country.

"I'm worried that too many people, both in politics and out, don't appreciate the seriousness of the threat to American security and the evil of the enemy that faces us - more evil or as evil as Nazism and probably more dangerous that the Soviet Communists we fought during the long Cold War," Lieberman said.

"I want to make sure that I satisfy my responsibilities and use my seniority in the Senate to make the future of the families of Connecticut safer than it would otherwise be. I don't think that Ned Lamont gets that and that's a serious difference between us.

What's most telling about this is that Lieberman and Zell Miller seem to be the ONLY highly visible Democrats who understand we're in a war against terrorists.

Makes you wonder if 99% of Democrats are really socialists disguising themselves under the name of a political party.

They're either that or a bunch of "useful idiots".

All of this from an ultra-conservative Republican.

Potion wore off, Dr. Jekyll?

I'd buy it better if he hadn't been backpedalling so much on his support of the war against terror.

I'll bet his support grew exponentially overnight.

When you're against a war that you're already in there can be nothing but bad timing in store for you. That's what the Dems & socialists have run up against.

The MoveOn/DU/KOs/Soros crowd win a minor victory in Lamont's win on Tuesday, then Thursday the rug is pulled out from under them giving Lieberman the opportunity of a lifetime to say "See, I was right".

For the Democrats, there never will be 'good' timing because they're at the mercy of whatever AQ has planned. And THAT'S a stupid position to be in.

I wonder about the reverb today's airline threat will have on Lieberman's independant run and other races. I'm sure the wackos at DU are already saying "the threat was just a plot by Bush and Rove to prop up the GOP before the elections!"

There is no doubt in my mind that if this story had broke on Monday - Lieberman would have won the primary. Even the flaming liberal East coast whackos are not COMPLETELY stupid. (well, some of them anyway.)

But he's wrong; WE are not fighting against stopping the war, THEY are.

Things are about to get crazy. Democrats are going to be forced to follow the Moonbat Migration currently pulling their party or actually realize there IS a war against terrorism and we're the #1 target. Moore, Sheehan and their ilk have made it known they're going to tar and feather any democrat that votes against their wishes.

I don't know whether to get a bucket of popcorn or a good seat belt. Maybe both.

Lieberman has lost the war of derogatory comparison. Nazi is not the power word. Islamic fascist has better rhythm and is more adaptable to street chant.

Gee K?

Dya think there's some hope that a few folks will figure that they've been had?

And all this Hate America stuff was bad for us afterall?

Maybe there a backlash of equal and opposite force to come?

There's a lot of folks praying for that ...and have been for sometime now.

While I agree with you, I don't think Lieberman can be the first to use it effectively. CAIR and their terrorist associates will hammer him, accusing him of being anti-Muslim...and get away with it.

The first to use it is going to take a lot of heat. I think there's another FR thread reporting that Bush used the phrase -- I think he's the only one who could and not suffer politically. Once it's out there in the public, we'll hear more of it.

I think the cRATs thought they could ride the anti-war position the way many did during Vietnam. Unfortunately, when defending your country and your culture against an aggressive, unappeasable force like islam, "anti-war" isn't a position that makes sense.

I think the democrats have been led into a blind alley by John Kerry, Howard Dean, and the other warmed-over hippies in the party.

I wonder how the Lieberman/Lamont contest would have looked if this thwarted attack had been uncovered two weeks ago.

Politicans won't. They're already on the record -- very vocally, too -- as to which side of the terrorism fence they stand on. They won't back down; if anything they'll go further left.

They're the living definition of insanity -- doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

islamofascist has been in use for quite a while in venues such as Savage. Now it has appeared in public as islamic fascist in the very top office and that gives official sanction. Nazi is bad, but nazis are also fascist. The WW II Axis was fascist in its entirety, including Japan. We are back to that. islamist didn't catch on--too subtle.
