Why does one need potassium Iodine?
My husband (retired Pharmacist) said one needs a RX to buy it.
I'd heard we needed a prescription too; it's used to protect against cancer in the event of a nuclear attack.
I don't think so....http://www.cvs.com/CVSApp/cvs/gateway/detail?prodid=190658
I believe it is potassium iodide that is used when there may be nuclear fallout or dirty bomb attack. It takes up the iodide absorption sites on the thyroid and prevents the radioactive iodide/iodine from getting much into the thyroid.
The radioactive iodide could accumulate in the thyroid and cause cancer, especially in children who have higher metabolisms.
Has to be taken before the fallout hits.
