ALBUQUERQUE -- Right in the middle of todays deadly carjacker pursuit, the Bernalillo County Sheriffs Department arrested two members of Albuquerques famous Unser racing family. Both Al Unser Sr. and Bobby Unser Sr. were booked into the Metro Detention Center this afternoon charged with failure to obey a police officer and resisting arrest.
Both walked out of the jail about 3:30 p.m.
The brothers, who have a combined seven checkered flags at the Indianapolis 500 and are huge names in the racing world, apparently thought their celebrity status meant they were above the law.
The police pursuit of a stolen car, complete with reported shotgun fire aimed at pursuing officers, ended about 11 a.m. when the suspect crashed into another car and then accidentally or deliberately shot himself to death with the sawed-off shotgun. That dramatic conclusion happened at an intersection close to some Unser family property.
While the incident was still unfolding, Bernalillo County sheriff's investigators allege Al Unser started going through a roadblock in an attempt to get to his property. Despite six or seven warnings to leave the area, he still refused to leave, saying it was his property--he owned it.
When the deputy told him he would be arrested, Unser allegedly said, You can't take me to jail, and began cussing at the officer.
Officers report he then jerked away and said, Don't you know who I am? I'm Al Unser.
A short time after he was arrested, Bobby Unser showed up. Deputies said he, too, refused to leave and resisted arrest.
Both were transported to holding cells at the Valley substation before being taken to jail.
They simply told them numerous times to leave the area, and they simply refused to do so, Erin Kinnard of the Bernalillo County Sheriffs Department said. Were not talking about a situation where we're trying to catch a shoplifter.
This was a serious and dangerous situation.
KRQE News 13 was told Al Unser threatened the arresting officer, telling him he would get back at him some day.
People on the scene also said the deputies didnt recognize Al Unser and didnt care who he was, they just wanted the men to leave since shots were being fired in the area.
Contacted later, Al Unser Jr. declined a request for an interview. KRQE News 13 was unable to reach Bobby Unser.
I presume you're on the "fillet and release" program? ;-)
Those must be the ones they've been busy with in Northern California.
Indeed.
You can't take me to jail, Don't you know who I am? I'm Al Unser.
My favorite is a dozen crappies early mornings in May from Williams Bay area of Lake Geneva...much butter.
Sorry; I'm too old to stay up any later.
Thanks.
So you think Important People should be able to blow through a roadblock?
Kerry, is that you?
Thank you. I just finished reading every reply on this thread:

If I had such low opinions and comments about the owner and mods here I wouldn't bother to be a member.
It is not obligatory to be a member here, since they hate it here so much it's good that they were banned.
I am not familiar with "clown possee" but it sounds like a site for some real losers.
You are a piece of work.
still waiting to see a thread about a cop killed on duty where people say "one less thug with a god complex to disrupt our freedoms"
Since I never posted any such thing, I'm just going to blow you off. You're obviously one of those Freepers who put words in the mouths of other posters, then proceed to beat them up over your fevered imaginings.
Speaking of pieces of work...
How in the world could this be considered "advocating a civil war"?!?
bump
Then why don't you explain your point?
Or are you one of those Freepers who looks for any excuse to blow people off?
It is named after the Unser family. It is a large 4 lane (mostly) road. It's not a private road as the reporting might infer.
That really says it all. The Unsers knew it was wrong to run the police block and a lesser plebe would be rightly arrested for it, but gosh darnit, they're simply above the law in those parts!
This appears to have been a public road. No excuse for that behavior.
You have got to be kidding ...
I believe very firmly in property rights, but you are full of hooey.
A property owner has no right to do anything that is going to endanger his neighbors, period.
If you were Hezbollah, and you started shooting Katusha's from your backyard, and the police have reasonable cause to believe it is your yard it is coming from, they have the right to enter your property, without permission. They may need a search warrent to remove evidence, but they can enter the propoerty and stop you from firing.
If a convict escapes from jail, and the police are following him, and he runs onto your property, they can follow him there, and you have no authority to make them leave, or grant him amnesty.
The police were fully within thier rights, regardless of whether the car was on Unser's property or not. A crime occured, and the police have not only the right, but the duty, to investigate. It is called a crime scene investigation. Whether the perp was still dangerous is only something that can be assumed in hindsight. Maybe he was dead, maybe not. Maybe the gas tank was leaking and about to blow, maybe not. Maybe they just needed to tag the evidence. Who cares. Regardless, it was a crime scene. You dont contaminate crime scenes with stupid property owners.
Ask Eschoir, billy paul and ash about that...
It's your choice to not make yourself clear. Believe it or not, I'm here to learn. Did you ever consider that your initial assumptions about me might be mistaken?
And what do those banned people have to do with anything?
