ALBUQUERQUE -- Right in the middle of todays deadly carjacker pursuit, the Bernalillo County Sheriffs Department arrested two members of Albuquerques famous Unser racing family. Both Al Unser Sr. and Bobby Unser Sr. were booked into the Metro Detention Center this afternoon charged with failure to obey a police officer and resisting arrest.
Both walked out of the jail about 3:30 p.m.
The brothers, who have a combined seven checkered flags at the Indianapolis 500 and are huge names in the racing world, apparently thought their celebrity status meant they were above the law.
The police pursuit of a stolen car, complete with reported shotgun fire aimed at pursuing officers, ended about 11 a.m. when the suspect crashed into another car and then accidentally or deliberately shot himself to death with the sawed-off shotgun. That dramatic conclusion happened at an intersection close to some Unser family property.
While the incident was still unfolding, Bernalillo County sheriff's investigators allege Al Unser started going through a roadblock in an attempt to get to his property. Despite six or seven warnings to leave the area, he still refused to leave, saying it was his property--he owned it.
When the deputy told him he would be arrested, Unser allegedly said, You can't take me to jail, and began cussing at the officer.
Officers report he then jerked away and said, Don't you know who I am? I'm Al Unser.
A short time after he was arrested, Bobby Unser showed up. Deputies said he, too, refused to leave and resisted arrest.
Both were transported to holding cells at the Valley substation before being taken to jail.
They simply told them numerous times to leave the area, and they simply refused to do so, Erin Kinnard of the Bernalillo County Sheriffs Department said. Were not talking about a situation where we're trying to catch a shoplifter.
This was a serious and dangerous situation.
KRQE News 13 was told Al Unser threatened the arresting officer, telling him he would get back at him some day.
People on the scene also said the deputies didnt recognize Al Unser and didnt care who he was, they just wanted the men to leave since shots were being fired in the area.
Contacted later, Al Unser Jr. declined a request for an interview. KRQE News 13 was unable to reach Bobby Unser.
And your's is so colored by hatred that you can't see the truth through it.
Makes sense. Firewater cures many ills.
I don't see how anybody can think this is a property rights issue. It didn't even happen on their property if I'm reading the article correctly. They got in trouble for attempting to break through a police barrier.
And you know what would be happening if one or both of them got through the barrier and caught a bullet. They'd be suing the police department for not warning them of the seriousness of the situation.
It's true: I hate tyrants. Whatever their stripe.
Uh Oh...
Tyrants, uniformed thugs, representatives of the collective. Any more colorful descriptives?
Yep
So, the cops must be hi skool grajuates.
People on the scene also said the deputies didnt recognize Al Unser and didnt care who he was
Hey, lookie here, Deputy Clem-Bob! These-here guys has got the same name as the street we-uns is on! Go figur!
"Know what I mean, Vern?"
For the cops or for you?
I've got volumes of them. You forgot "hired help" and "Gestapo."
Suprisingly, there are STILL people in this country who don't need to be mollycoddled by the nanny state.
Maybe you'd feel safer if you moved to England, Gb58. ;-)

I guess I have to wait for the media to tell me what was going on. The media told me that O.J. was innocent, but the implications so far is that these guys are nepharious ne'erdowells, eh, and its astonishing how far the mighty fall.
These guys had the audacity to contest authority (gasp!). They must either be complicite or culpable.
Everybody knows that the Unsers (et ali) can NEVER be trusted and are known world-wide as anything BUT being upstanding citizens. Hopefully, the authorities that took the Unsers into custody used a judicious amount of force in so doing (just to show these guys who's boss).
Seriously though: Mr. Unser (Al), you should seriously consider retaining a lawyer with respect to either libel, slander, or both (as the circumstances warrant). The referenced article is garbage. Whatever actually transpired is irrelevant: the reporter/news-media outlet fully intended to malign you.
The only thing missing are Reuters pix of Bobby & Al in cahoots with Green Helmet Guy, Tourist Guy and/or Wailing Woman in some sort of deviant sexual tryst.
For the cops or for you?
What you may or may not call me has no relevance to the issue. On this thread I've learned all about you that I need to know. You are a hater and using my clarivoyance that you say I have I'd be willing to bet that your hatred extends to a wide range of people and not just limited to cops.
On first thought I found your attitude disgusting but upon reflection I just have pity for you. Going through life hating must be a miserable way to live.
Abandon my country to the cop haters? No thanks.
On the contrary, Ironjack is a well-respected, reasoning Constitutionalist whose contributions to the Free Republic over the years have done this place proud.
You don't like authority. God help your boss.
Or your wife.
Well, ya know, sadly, it's the American way.
Like yours? LOL!!!
