Heavy fighting continued Wednesday as IDF troops again battled to clean out a nest of terrorists that returned to Bint Jbeil after they withdrew from the village in the last week of July. |
| Some of the bloodiest battles since the war began have taken place in the village which is known throughout Lebanon as the Hizbullah capital of the south. Two IDF paratroopers were killed late Tuesday evening in clashes at Bint Jbeil. Both were members of an elite reconnaissance unit; they were identified as 21 year old Staff Sergeant Oren Lifschitz of Kibbutz Gazit and 21 year old Staff Sergeant Moran Cohen of Kibbutz Ashdot Yaakov. A soldier from the units search and rescue team was killed trying to evacuate one of the paratroopers after first treating him on the battlefield. Seven soldiers were wounded during the fight, including one with serious wounds and another moderately injured after their tank was hit by an anti-tank missile. A second tank was also hit in the battle. Two soldiers were killed and seven were wounded on Monday in the same village. IDF soldiers had been carrying out ongoing counter-terrorism operations since capturing the village on July 26.

I have no direct military experience, and am certainly no expert on military tactics, but I just don't get how this war is being fought. So Israel captures this village once, withdraws, and somehow the Hezzies are able to return and dig in sufficiently so that the retaking is so slow and costly? Why does this village still exist?
Israel is losing this war. Maybe it's the politicians' fault, maybe not.
The Lebanese PM, who is not Hezbollah, has said why should they give Israel anything when Lebanon is winning. (It's a relative thing in the Middle East). He's right. Given Israel's vaunted power, and claims prior history, this is an Arab victory.
More and increased terrorism to come in the West Bank. Israel might have to beg Saudi Arabia for mercy and intervene with Hamas. I don't think they're the merciful type though.
Wouldn't saturating the place with fuel-air explosive insure there are no more roaches left to crawl out of the woodwork?
How do you figure?
I don't know who's "winning" or "losing." It does seem odd, however, that in the time it took the U.S. military to overrun Iraq the IDF continues to fight over one town.
Level the playing field...
Being Israel, you would have totally different objectives in a country connected to your own than our objectives in Iraq. Not to mention our military is probably much bigger than all of Israel.

Zec 12:6 In that day will I make the governors of Judah like an hearth of fire among the wood, and like a torch of fire in a sheaf; and they shall devour all the people round about, on the right hand and on the left: and Jerusalem shall be inhabited again in her own place, even in Jerusalem.

Why does this village still exist?
The village is entirely wrecked, with not a house standing, although there were many nice houses and villas there once.
The persistent fighting is amid ruins.
Does anyone know if the other, higher placed town, Maroun al-Rus is under Israeli or Hezbollah control?
See, this is the part I don't get. How does someone find sufficient cover behind which to stand up to the IDF amidst ruins and rubble? In some instances the reports have mentioned bunkers and tunnels, and the Hezzies certainly had plenty of opportunity to dig in before this current war started. But once the IDF clears a town for the first time, don't they destroy any defensive positions before leaving? It's the difficulty of the second taking that has me scratching my head.
