A Palestinian militant fires toward Israeli troops during an arrest raid in the West Bank village of Qabatiyeh near Jenin, Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2006. Four Palestinians were wounded when the army arrested an Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades militant, Palestinians sources said. The army said two Islamic Jihad militants were arrested during the operation. It does look off, but I'm not sure what the propaganda pourpose if this pic would be. The toys-in-the-rubble pics had an obvious purpose, but I don't see the rationale for staging this pic.

There is a round ejecting, but I don't see the magazine either. I think it may have been 1 round loaded. It is interesting to see the weapons sight is an EOTech like what our people use.

yeah,
IMHO, most "news" is propaganda, bought and paid for by the highest bidder.
Lacking a "really good shot" creates the need for "embellished" photos which serve the purpose of conveying the "message"
All opinion pieces are likewise "purchased commodities" - like the Armstrong Williams columns.

the shot does look a bit off....I just don't see any reason to alter the image....it serves no purpose. It doesn't create a sympathetic response for the poor islamofascists.

Assuming that the shooter is using the building as partial concealment, wouldn't this put the photographer out in the open in the middle of a fire fight?

The lighting appears that it could be genuine.
Just one problem: the gun doesn't have any bullets in it. There is no magazine attached. Guns without ammunition don't shoot.

If not, the photographer is standing in clear view of whoever the shooter is trying to hit. Yes. This is often the case. We may see these people to be criminals engaged in terrorism but the MSM sees them as equal combantants fighting an unfair war with limited means.
Time Magazine has a reporter who they know to be Australian, non-muslim, and a journalist who roams among the insurgents in Iraq and seems to be in phone communication with Al Qaeda.
The terrorists know that the media is their friend in this war. If the media were loyalists to the West, they'd drop a dime of them and turn them in to the proper authorities.

It does. The shooter's left hand is wrapped around it. The bottom of the magazine is seen under his hand.

Muzzle smoke is obscuring the kid with the hands over his ears. Shell casings are flying. Lighting appears consistent for parallel source from above-right-behind.
My question is, why, if there is something to be defended from out there, are these people standing around watching? I think it is a clean, but staged image.

Sun appears to be above them and behind them (2 coordinates, not 2 suns). Also the wall is affording some shielding of the light source. The lighting appears that it could be genuine.
Also, photographer could have used a flash (yes, even in broad daylight) to fill the shadows. The closer subject, with the rifle, would be more strongly lighted by the fill flash. This can sometimes cause slightly strange looking photographs; they look like bad photoshop jobs but aren't.
