A Palestinian militant fires toward Israeli troops during an arrest raid in the West Bank village of Qabatiyeh near Jenin, Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2006. Four Palestinians were wounded when the army arrested an Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades militant, Palestinians sources said. The army said two Islamic Jihad militants were arrested during the operation. "I think the mag is just behind the forward hand grip. It is the black thing partially obscuring the blue t-shirt, emergeing from behind the strap."

Then that must be the most oddly shaped clip made. Something is wrong with this photo.

The only thing that looks fishy in that photo is the Pali using an Israeli type rifle. Israel has many M16 type rifles, not sure about Palistinians.

Israeli M16 rifles tend to have the wide sling straps as pictured. The mag-pull on the end of the mag is a jury-rigged setup of what looks like electrical tape and some cording, a common US military practice, but certainly not exclusive. The vertical forgrip looks to be a Fobus design and I think they are made in Israel.

Some questions for you. Does the shooter seem to stand out in sharp relief to those around him and is the casing being ejected to the front of the weapon? What should be the relation of the smoke exiting the barrel to the ejected brass if only one shot as been fired?
The taller man should be doing a very rapid hot brass dance if the photo is real and more than one shot has been fired.

Staged. If the "civillians" were concerned for their safety, they'd leave the area.

They are supporters.

There are more damning images to investigate and expose.

Getting hung up on inconsequential "fake" images will result in the same thing that the gag Kerry-Fonda picture did. Discredit the genuine article.

"Maybe the MSM should just create a new category called "Opinion Photos"

LOL The "fake but accurate" theme seems to run through all these pics. The MSMs attitude seems to be: "If an event is known to have happened (e.g., bombings, gunfire, dead children) then it's ok to symbolically represent that event by composing a photo with props added in order to create the maximum emotional effect and (hopefully) win a Pulitzer Prize. A staged or photoshopped photo is not fake if it symbolically represents something that actually happened." So, you are right, these are "Opinion Photos," a photographer's "take" on actual events, his reconstruction of events.

We have to be careful here. We're doing fine nailing these b*stards with fake photos but we must be accurate and %100 sure at all times or we will loose our creditability.

Maybe the MSM should just create a new category called "Opinion Photos" and let the Photoshoppers do as they wish on those. ;)

Like editorial cartoons, only editorial "images".

I would say staged. But, ???

Why?

Everyone's antenna is out on these photos now, but that's not a bad thing.

" Any idea as to why the strap appears to be on an outward angle "

It appears to be fastened to the top of the weapon which could cause it to go out a little before going down.

Plus your enlargement definitely shows lack of a mag in the well.

So, is this guy an idiot? Shooting at IDF soldiers with no magazine in the weapon? Or, is he so quick that he can move his hand up to release the mag and back to the trigger guard before the smoke from the end of the muzzle dissipates and the last spent round casing gets more than 2 feet from the weapon? If so, he's good maybe his name in al-Barney-Omar and they only give him one bullet a day.

"Enlarged the photo and circled the section I found questionable. It looks at though someone's head (hair) is between the shooter's armpit and the butt of the weapon. It looks at if the hair is actually overlapping on the butt. Does anyone else see that?"

Yes, I see what you are talking about and posted that I noticed something off about this area.

This photo appeared in Time magazine (July 31, 2006 issue) with a caption explaining the fire to be that of a downed Israeli jet.

It's really just a garbage dump on fire.

The light on the face is what at first glance made me think it was fake. But the more I look the more it might be real.

Regardless that shooter looks like Tom Hanks after a few months on the Island.

Like editorial cartoons, only editorial "images".

Even real images are used that way already: during the Vietnam war, there was the photo of the burning Buddhist monks, of the naked girl screaming on the road, of the Viet Cong soldier being shot in the head by a South Vietnamese soldier. These were powerful images that turned public opinion against the war. And they were intended to do just that.

I disagree.

The magazine is there, it's just a close color match to the guy's shirt behind the shooter, since the anodizing tends to fade over time from wear. The sling is attached to the front sight extension, rather than the front swivel. See how it's bunched up? The gun also has a vertical front grip on the fore stock, which accounts for the weird angle of the shooter's left hand. There is a wedge shaped deflecting block just behind the ejection port on the A4 model, so left hand shooters would not catch hot brass in the face. As rifles are worn in from firing, the angle of ejection tends to shift.

Note also how the kid on the far left is cringing from the muzzle blast. I can attest that it hurts like hell.

Or it is momentum resulting from having swung the rifle to position from the shooters right-to-left.

Shooter's face is that of Tom Hanks as he appeared in Cast Away.

I kind of thought so, but I'm no photographic expert, so it's hard for me to comment on standing out in sharp relief. However, it looks to me like the ejected case is in front of the ejection port on the rifle. I've fired a couple of M4s / M16s and it seems to me that all of them kicked the brass back and to the right of the shooter. I suppose perspective could be deceptive here, but it sure looks fishy to me.

What should be the relation of the smoke exiting the barrel to the ejected brass if only one shot as been fired?

Hard to say. I've never seen geniune slow motion film of it, so I'm not sure.

Lighting is way off. look at the sun highlights on the spectators. the shooter would have the same highlights.
